Last Call

on June 9th, 2009 by slette

With the upcoming releases of A&G, OPC, Topps Chrome and Goodwins, I figured I better put out the call one final time before people (myself included) get all excited about these new sets and put other releases on the backburner. I’ve knocked a very handsome chunk out of these lists thanks to all of [...]

on June 9th, 2009 by chrisolds

We got our first look at the retail version of 2009 Donruss Americana here on Tuesday and one thing’s apparent — one of my cardboard pet peeves has reared its ugly head again and I really didn’t realize the scope of it until now.

on June 9th, 2009 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

At age 20, Al Kaline of the Detroit Tigers became the youngest player ever to win a batting title by hitting .340 in 1955.

** factoid courtesy of ‘Armchair Reader – Grand Slam Baseball’
Personal note – I am shocked that in the last 30 years that no hitter has come close to this feat.  In the [...]

Beat The Blogger Results/Matchups

on June 9th, 2009 by Tuff Stuff

We fell short of our goal of getting more than 300 entries in the Beat the Blogger
contes
t, but we are inching closer. The good news is we’ll give it another shot
this week, and if we can eclipse the 300 mark, one luckyChipper.jpg winner
will claim the authentic, signed Chipper Jones jersey that the Blogger is just
dying to give away.

A pair of newcomers to the contest posted near-perfect scores to tie for the top spot
in last week’s contest. Christie Merkle and Dennis Juntenen each scored
10s to easily better the Blogger’s total of 5 (I swear I’ll try harder) and each will
now be receiving an authentic signed 8-by-10 color photo for their efforts.

For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest, the idea is simple.
The Blogger posts 10 matchups each week and then selects his choices for the winners
of those matchups. Contestants enter the Beat the Blogger contest by clicking on
the “Comment” section
below the post with the matchups and then select their
own 10 winners
. You can also designate one of your picks as a “Doubler” and
you will receive an extra point if you’re correct so don’t forget to designate your
contest.jpgDoubler”
pick and increase your chances of winning. If you Beat The Blogger’s total and post
the high score for the week
, you win. The regular weekly prize is an authentic
signed 8-by-10 color photo
of stars such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew
Brees, Marshall Faulk, Santonio Holmes, Gale Sayers, Catfish Hunter
and many more.
From time to time, the Blogger will sweeten the pot for the weekly contest and that’s
where the Chipper Jones jersey comes into play. If we can get more than 300 entries this
week, the weekly winner will receive the Jones jersey so we need everybody to spread
the word about the contest
so we can reach our goal.

This week’s matchups are posted below so make sure you get your picks posted
1/2 hour before the start of the first ga
me on Saturday to be eligible.
And don’t forget to spread the word about how easy it is to win playing Beat The
Blogger
so we can reach our goal of more than 300 entries this week.

This week’s Matchups

Saturday June 13

MLB
Minnesota vs. Chicago Cubs
Boston vs. Philadelphia
Oakland vs. San Francisco
New York Mets vs. New York Yankees
Atlanta vs. Baltimore
Sunday June 14

New York Mets vs. New York Yankees
Detroit vs. Pittsburgh
Cincinnati vs. Kansas City
San Diego vs. L.A. Angels
Washington vs. Tampa Bay

Good Luck and Spread the word.

The 19th Hartland turns up after 46 years …

on June 9th, 2009 by T.S.

Casey2.JPG

The Hartland folks are touting this as a chance to go back in time, and
given the description of the Casey Stengel Hartland Statue prototype, it’s
hard to take issue with their assessment.

Hartland of Ohio President Fay Halliwell recently announced that
the company would be producing a Hartland Statue of Casey Stengel, which is newsworthy
enough, but gets a second bump by virtue of the fact that the “new” statue will be
made from a near half-century old prototype.

The metal prototype of Casey was already done in 1963 when Hartland Plastics
was sold to Revlon, and company owner Charlie Revlon showed up at the production facility
in Hartland, Wis., and shut everything down. “When Revlon came in and told them to
destroy all the molds, Frank Fulop saved the Stengel prototype,” said Craig Blakenship,
Hartland’s official historian and a recent addition to the Hartland Ohio group that
will produce the 19th statue.

Fulop, who died in 2002, is a legendary figure in the hobby, having been
the principal name attached to the collectible that has been a hobby mainstay virtually
from the earliest days. The full-color Stengel prototype has been in the possession
of Fulop’s son, who lives in Colorado.

Blankenship, a Hartland fan for decades, purchased the www.Hartlands.com
website from Kevin Cloutier. “I love Hartlands and I bought the website as a way to
communicate with collectors,” he said.

Conceived at the time when Stengel was managing the Mets, the statue
prototype portrays him in a Mets uniform. Halliwell said the negotiations about use
of logos are still underway; the statue already has licensing from CMG Worldwide,
which markets the rights to some of the biggest names in the baseball galaxy, including
Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb, to name a handful.

It’s that licensing that contributes to a suggested retail price that
Halliwell figures will be around $100 for a figure that will be manufactured in the
United States (a Washington state artist who works under the company name L’il Monsters)
and limited to perhaps 200 pieces. Hartland officials also noted that the Stengel
statues, expected to be available later this year, will be manufactured to the same
weight as the originals and will replicate the off-white color in the originals as
well.

My Dave Winfield ‘Fab 5′ – Card #5

Now that my Dave Winfield player collection is complete I wanted to take the time to show off my favorite 5 cards from this set.
Card #5 – 1988 Score
While not the best image of Dave Winfield, this card certainly illustrates the incredible power that ‘Big Dave’ possessed at the plate.  The 1988 Score design will [...]
