The list of 103 names on the infamous 2003 steroid list is floating
around in cyberspace but has yet to be confirmed. The list has surfaced
on several sports blogs but comes with no evidence that the
list below is the actual list of MLB players guilty of failing steroid tests back
in 2003 or just an attempt to drum up some publicity for a website.
If the list is the actual list, it comes with very few surprises as far as the players
named and reads like a who’s who of former and current MLB stars. I’m sure somewhere
out there Bud Selig is demanding to know how this information continues to
be leaked out and is likely questioning the timing of the leak as well, with the Mid-Summer
Classic (All-Star Game) less than two weeks away and yet another black eye looming
for MLB. This is supposed to be the time the game is being celebrated not ripped apart
at every turn, but the funny thing is nobody seems to care. Much like when the steroid
accusations began to surface back in the mid-to-late 90s. At that time, everybody
(players, management, media, etc.) looked the other way on suspected steroid usage
because the game was bouncing back from the work stoppage of 1994 and he turnstyles
were spinning again.
Now,
the turnstyles are still spinning at a rapid rate despite steroid scandals coming
our way faster than a Roger Clemen’s sterioid-induced fastball and the general
feeling among fans seems to be the same type of apathy demonstrated when the news
first started to break more than a decade ago. Not sure if some fans’ reaction (or
lack thereof) is because they simply don’t want to believe their beloved heroes could
all be cheats or if they feel if they don’t react to the news and voice their displeasure,
the game will be able to put the scandals in the rear view quicker and move on from
the tarnished days of rampant steroid use. Or maybe fans have had all the scandal
they can take and they’ve now become immune to anything and everything that comes
up with a negative connotation attached to it.
Whatever it is, it clearly demonstrates that baseball can bounce back from anything.
Like a cockroach who shrugs off the repeated sprays of Raid, baseball’s resilentcy
is second to none. “America’s Pastime: the cockroach of the sporting world.” Now
there’s a marketing campaign I can wrap my arms around.

On the same day that somebody e-mailed this cool picture of Brett
Favre in a Minnesota Viking uniform, somebody else posted online what is supposed
to be the list of 103 names of PED users from the Mitchell Report. I am able to say
with some degree of certainty that the reliability quotient for both of these new
flashes is identical, roughly zero.
Speculating about Favre unretiring again and going to the Vikings strikes
me as reasonably good, clean fun, since it presumably hurts no one, save for a few
thousand Packer fans who have to reach for an antacid every time the very idea of
Brett wearing purple gets floated.
But the List is another matter (I capitalize “List” because I suspect
that when all is said and done it’s going to be a proper noun). I can’t pretend I
was surprised when I learned the unofficial list was posted online; that should have
been expected.
I am, however, old fashioned enough to insist that it’s just plain wrong
that it’s been done. I can’t tell you how anguished I would be if I played any role
in tarnishing somebody’s good name in that fashion. The fact that so many in cyberville
don’t see anything wrong with it points to serious flaws either in the fundamental
underpinnings of the online world or similarly egregious gaps in the ethics training
of the individuals involved, or more likely, both.
I know that the List is going to be “outed” one of these days; hell,
it’s a miracle that it hasn’t happened yet. And even when that takes place, it’s going
to be nearly as deplorable an ethical violation as the unofficial outing(s). But until
that day comes, I won’t be a party to pushing forth any of the names into the public
square. Not gonna do it.
The only concession I’ll make to such boiler-room nonsense is to point
out that one Albert Pujols is not on the online version. But there are so many major
stars and otherwise likely Hall of Famers on it that offering a big sigh of relief
about Albert’s exclusion would seem to be damning with faint praise. If/when the List
gets out – and assuming it looks anything at all like the unofficial ones – taking
note that the greatest star of his generation is not among the names is going to be
small consolation.
But I will be willing to dish about the idea of Favre being a Viking,
but I’ll save it for another day. I just wanted an excuse to run that cool picture.

Dave CashI always liked Dave Cash. He had a lot of style, as you can see in this card. He’s got the wristbands, the hat’s cocked just right and he’s got just the hint of an arrogant sneer as he pretends to look at the pitcher that’s going to throw him …

1984 Topps Darryl Strawberry
Of course I had to pick up this card!!!
I am about half-way through Darryl’s autobiography right now and my appreciation for him as a player continues to grow. Straw was a baseball superstar in the mid-to-late 80’s and his dominance on the field was not matched by many. Amazingly while his personal [...]
