I have been busy trying to come up with a design for the Bad Wax football rookie cards. Below is my first try, I like how it came out but I am open to suggestions. I kicked around the idea of opening this up to the readers of the blog to come up with a [...]

I’ll admit that I don’t know much about Mike “King” Kelly. I do however know that when it comes to cool baseball cards, this might be the coolest ever done. It comes from 1888’s Goodwin Champions set, which was set to compete with Allen & Ginter.
What’s incredibly ironic is that Upper Deck will soon release [...]

A rack pack box? Sorry, I guess Topps must have that trademarked, because Upper Deck calls them Fat Packs. Whatever. As a set collector, I did some quick calculations on these and found I’d get 648 cards from a 500 card set. After the 2-a-fatpack Starquest turquoise cards, I’d still pull 612 cards, more than [...]

It was just announced the Major League Baseball Players Association renewed Upper
Deck’s trading card license. While the news may come as somewhat of a shock to
some within the hobby, I never heard anything more than a few unsubstantiated rumors
and now we know for sure they were just that.
The rumors that were circulating talked of an exclusive deal being
formulated
for either Topps or Panini, but that was likely based on pure speculation
after the NBA’s surprising decision to grant an exclusive license to newcomer Panini
in the basketball card market. But the two sports couldn’t be more different both
on the playing field and within the hobby.
In its 20-year history with MLB, Upper Deck has produced some products that were both
innovative and appealing to the eye at the same time. But more importantly from the
MLBPA’s standpoint was UD’s commitment to growing the hobby and ultimately creating
a new generation of collectors. In case you haven’t noticed, kids of the last two
decades or so have abandoned the hobby quicker than you can say World of Warcraft and
the MLBPA was looking for the card companies to step up, spend some big-time dollars
in an effort to get those kids back in the hobby.
Well, Upper Deck made a comittment to try and get the kids to stop tearing
into zombies and gangsters and start tearing into packs instead and that effort made
them an easy choice for getting the renewed deal with the MLBPA.
Not to say the other card companies haven’t stepped up their recruiting efforts with
kids as well, but UD’s UpperDeckU virtual online game is actually something
today’s children can relate to, and most importantly, enjoy playing enough that they
continue to come back to it. It’s an innovative approach to attract the next generation
of collectors. Much like UD’s products were when they first hit the scene back in
1988, their new approach is different from most of the rest and that’s what appears
to have made it an instant success.

That’s all we had to start with. Just a little tiny piece of a puzzle. But a few questions later, we know this:
It is from the 1987 Donruss “The Rookies” set.
I figured out the answer to Andy’s Shopped Cards #19 this morning, but decided to give it some time to let others play along.
SO PLAY [...]

But when others make a parody video involving KISS, I’m still drawn to it.
Perhaps the new KISS album will restore my faith in the once-loved band. Or perhaps Ace’s solo album will put all debates to rest, showing that he is the true and only Mr. Space Ace.
Thanks to Hard Rock Hideout for bringing this [...]

The Orioles pull into the lead with a nice little package. I don’t understand the obsession with oversized baseball cards…why not the standard 2.5 x 3.5? I can’t fit these into my binder. These are actually pretty cool though, with photos on both sides. There are no stats to be found, so you can pretend [...]

I hate to admit that when it comes to action films, I am not much of an expert. I’ve never seen a movie featuring Bruce Lee, anything with Chuck Norris, or anyone else in that genre.
I was familiar with Jackie Chan after seeing ‘Rumble in the Bronx’ . After that, it seemed like Chan did [...]

Never one to duck potential controversy, Razor President Brian Gray is at it again.
Gray recently began taking orders for a U.S. Army All-American Bowl football product that includes autographs from the top 2008 high school seniors (including highly touted Tennessee signee Bryce Brown) and base cards of three kids in junior high – the progeny [...]
