Did collectors give up the sticker war?

on July 7th, 2009 by Mario A.

Upon my return to collecting in 2007, the one complaint I heard over and over again in message boards, card shops, and though email was how terrible the sticker autograph was. At first I was completely torn since some stickers went so well with card designs (‘07 Finest, Moments & Milestones) but as time went [...]

A poor collector’s Refractor

on July 7th, 2009 by Mario A.

Today, the parallel of choice by collectors is the Refractor, introduced in 1993 by Topps. While many types of parallels have been introduced since then, perhaps Topps’ only competition ever came from Pinnacle Brands.
In 1993, the same year we got our hands on the very first Refractors (not counting 1990), Pinnacle began testing Dufex Technology. [...]

In the mail today, I received a Malcolm Kelly 2008 UD SP Authentic autographed rookie as a replacement for my Jamayel Smith 2009 UD Draft autographed rookie.  Jamayel Smith doesn’t look like he will be signing any cards for that set.  I think its a decent replacement.  Let me know what you get as a [...]

Exclusive Gallery: Kobe Bryant Exquisite Inscriptions

on July 7th, 2009 by Tracy Hackler

Upper Deck officials spent quality time with company spokesman and 2009 NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant Monday night for an autograph signing session sure to have collectors rejoicing when 2008-09 Exquisite hits later this month.
Since words really can’t do justice to these gems, we figured we’d let the images speak for themselves.
Update: Upper Deck asked Beckett [...]

Todd McFarlane Has the Right Idea

on July 7th, 2009 by gmoney168

By Brian Ferrell aka FlyerGuy22
Todd McFarlane has the right idea, at least in toys. I have to admit that I never had any interest in Starting Lineups figures growing up. What were you supposed to do with them? Then McFarlane introduced SportsPicks. They were a little bigger and a little more detailed. They were then [...]

Beat The Blogger Matchups

on July 7th, 2009 by Tuff Stuff

Because our die-hard Beat The Blogger players are fired up and ready to post
their picks, I posted them a little earlier than normal this week. So take advantage
of the extra time by studying up the matchups, making your picks and then you’ll have
the rest of the week to spread the word about the contest to all of your friends
and co-workers
so we can get a huge turnout. This week’s matchups are below.
As always, GOOD LUCK.

The Blogger’s struggles continued over the holiday weekend, as he managed to correctly
pick 6 of 10 but it wasn’t nearly enough to hang with two near-perfect efforts who
tied for the top spot in last week’s Beat The Blogger contest.

Brian M and Martin Kelly each got 9 of their 10 picks correct and then utilized
the Doubler to push their totals to 10 and win the weekly prize. For their efforts,
both will be receiving an 8-by-10 signed color photo.

For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest, the idea is simple.
The Blogger posts 10 matchups each week and then selects his choices for the winners
of those matchups. Contestants enter the Beat the Blogger contest by clicking on
the “Comment” section
below the post with the matchups and then select their
own 10 winners
. You can also designate one of your picks as a “Doubler” and
you will receive an extra point if you’re correct so don’t forget to designate your
contest.jpgDoubler”
pick and increase your chances of winning. If you Beat The Blogger’s total and post
the high score for the week
, you win. The regular weekly prize is an authentic
signed 8-by-10 color photo
of stars such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew
Brees, Marshall Faulk, Santonio Holmes, Gale Sayers, Catfish Hunter
and many more.
From time to time, the Blogger will sweeten the pot for the weekly contest and that’s
where the Chipper Jones jersey comes into play. If we can get more than 300 entries this
week, the weekly winner will receive the Jones jersey so we need everybody to spread
the word about the contest
so we can reach our goal.

This week’s Matchups

Saturday July 11

MLB

NY Yankees at LA Angels
St. Louis at Chicago Cubs
LA Dodgers at Milwaukee
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota
Texas at Seattle

Sunday July 12
Kansas City at Boston
Pittsburgh at Philadelphia
Oakland at Tampa Bay
Florida at Arizona
Atlanta at Colorado
