Dick Perez: The original sketch king

on July 10th, 2009 by Mario A.

It’s hard not to get jaded over the amount of lousy sketch cards found in Topps products over the past two years. For every masterful Brian Kong piece, odds are you will find one of these monstrosities. Not to mention that these “1 of 1″ sketch cards have completely flooded the market.
Well, never fear because [...]

Sending Out Another Package To Andre Dawson…

on July 10th, 2009 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

I’ve got another care package going out to Andre Dawson today.
Included are a few more baseball cards along with a donation to his foundation.  I have asked for some special inscriptions to be added to the cards and will share the results with you when they return.
I have also added a ‘20 Questions’ interview that I [...]

That Magnificnet 1987 MVP Season!!!

on July 10th, 2009 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

The 1987 baseball season was easily the greatest single-season in Andre Dawson’s career.  In his first year with the Chicago Cubs, Dawson certainly proved his worth to the team and quickly became it’s best all-around player.
The acknowledgements that year kept pouring in – National League All-star, Gold Glove Award winner, Silver Slugger Bat, and the [...]

Reds, Reds, and more Reds!!!

on July 10th, 2009 by JT

The good thing about people having problems is that they dump their problems on other people when they get overloaded. Marie over at A Cardboard Problem recently took a few 2009 O-Pee-Chee cards off my hands, and dumped a bunch of Reds on me in return. Here are just a few of the many highlights…

Mike Schmidt and Dale Murphy Have Something To Do With Andre Dawson Not Being In The Hall Of Fame…

on July 10th, 2009 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

As a fan of everything 80’s when it comes to baseball, I have a true appreciation for the sport’s greatest stars from that era.  And while I have my favorites, as we all do, I have no problem acknowledging that at times there were better players in the sport than the guys I had tagged [...]

Wax Heaven inspires a comic legend!

on July 10th, 2009 by Mario A.

A few days ago I wrote a blog about a baseball card I considered to be extremely creepy looking. Jay from The Mojo Hand blog, who has a seemingly endless supply of connections sent a link of the story to legendary comic book artist, Joe Rubinstein.
Mr. Rubinstein, who is currently hard at work on D.C.’s [...]

Dawson’s Jersey Deserves To Be Hanging Somewhere!!!

on July 10th, 2009 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

Prior to shutting down their operations and moving to Washington DC to be renamed the Washington Nationals, the Montreal Expos had retired Andre Dawson’s #10 jersey.  A special honor held for baseball’s elite players, this gesture by the team showed just how much Dawson meant to the team over the course of his 11 seasons [...]

Not So Deep Thoughts: Adultery is not the same as murder is it?

on July 10th, 2009 by Tuff Stuff

As most of you have heard by now, former NFL MVP Steve McNair was shot and
killed last weekend. McNair was killed by the 20-year-old girl he was having an affair
with. While this type of news is unfortunately quite commonplace these days, it doesn’t
make it any easier to understand the backlash that has followed his death.McNair.jpg

I listened to several different sports talk shows and have read several different
blog comments from fans who seem to have gotten adultery and murder confused because
some of their comments were pretty harsh. Examples of those comments are: “He got
what he deserved,”
“If you want to play, you’ve got to pay,” I’m done with him
and all the athletes like him that cheat.”

That last one really got me. I guess all those high-and-mighty callers/bloggers are
convinced they wouldn’t stray from their own spouse if they were constantly given
the opportunity to do so? Pulllllleeeeeese. While they are a small few of us who could
continually resist temptation and stay true, most, like McNair and thousands of others
before him, would fall short. By no means do I condone McNair’s actions, I’m simply
saying that all the couch potatoes out there need to come down from there high horse
and stop kidding themselves. And while adultery is 100 percent unacceptable in my
book, I don’t think think the punishment for doing it should be one’s life.

I believe the world-famous philosopher Chris Rock once said that “Men are only
as faithful as their options,” and he couldn’t be more accurate for most men and most
women for that matter. Star athletes have a ton of options when it comes to straying
while Joe Couch Potato can only dream of hooking up with the hot college chick
behind the counter at Wal-Mart. I guess that’s why they tend to jump on the old high
horse when making comments on a star athlete who actually does what he can only dream
of both on and off the field. Pure jealousy is my interpretation.

McNair’s pastor and close friend cautioned against judging the ex-NFL quarterback
during his memorial, reminding people who gathered for his memorial not to cast
the first stone when talking about his life off the field.

Amen to that. Not even Joe Couch Potato is perfect, even if he speaks as though he
is.

Andre Dawson Is The Definition Of A ‘5-Tool Player’

on July 10th, 2009 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

By now you should know that I enjoy the players that have an all-around game.  Sure I have my favorite power hitters and defensive specialists, but in my eyes nothing compares to the guys that havethe uncanny ability to excel at all aspects of the game.
And when it comes to Andre Dawson, this is certainly one of the [...]

Topps, please bring back the Atomic!

on July 10th, 2009 by Mario A.

During my first stint as a collector, the Atomic Refractor was the King of parallels. Back in the mid to late-90’s we didn’t have fifteen different colors to choose from. You either had a rare Refractor or an even more rare Atomic Refractor.
For one reason or another, Topps could never quite decide on the Atomic [...]

A&G HELP!!!

on July 10th, 2009 by slette

I pulled a mini card of a Dodo from some Extinct Creatures series. That being said, I can’t find anything about the card anywhere – no mention on the checklist, nothing. The back of the card (which seems to be the insert set for this checklist) shows there are five forever-dead animals in [...]

Beat The Blogger Picks

on July 10th, 2009 by Tuff Stuff

Because our die-hard Beat The Blogger players are fired up and ready to post
their picks, I posted them a little earlier than normal this week. So take advantage
of the extra time by studying up the matchups, making your picks and then you’ll have
the rest of the week to spread the word about the contest to all of your friends
and co-workers
so we can get a huge turnout. This week’s matchups are below.
As always, GOOD LUCK.

The Blogger’s struggles continued over the holiday weekend, as he managed to correctly
pick 6 of 10 but plan on some much tougher competition in the coming weeks. I’m tired
of just handing over the weekly prizes so easily and I now plan on doing my homework
with my picks and making it more difficult to Beat The Blogger. Good luck folks, I
think you’re gonna need it.

For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest, the idea is simple.
The Blogger posts 10 matchups each week and then selects his choices for the winners
of those matchups. Contestants enter the Beat the Blogger contest by clicking on
the “Comment” section
below the post with the matchups and then select their
own 10 winners
. You can also designate one of your picks as a “Doubler” and
you will receive an extra point if you’re correct so don’t forget to designate your
contest.jpgDoubler”
pick and increase your chances of winning. If you Beat The Blogger’s total and post
the high score for the week
, you win. The regular weekly prize is an authentic
signed 8-by-10 color photo
of stars such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew
Brees, Marshall Faulk, Santonio Holmes, Gale Sayers, Catfish Hunter
and many more.
From time to time, the Blogger will sweeten the pot for the weekly contest and that’s
where the Chipper Jones jersey comes into play. If we can get more than 300 entries this
week, the weekly winner will receive the Jones jersey so we need everybody to spread
the word about the contest
so we can reach our goal.

This week’s Matchups (Blogger’s picks in parenthesis)
Saturday July 11

MLB

NY Yankees at LA Angels (LA Angels)
St. Louis at Chicago Cubs (Chicago)
LA Dodgers at Milwaukee (LA Dodgers)
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota (Minnesota)
Texas at Seattle

Sunday July 12
Kansas City at Boston (Boston, Doubler)
Pittsburgh at Philadelphia (Philadelphia)
Oakland at Tampa Bay (Tampa Bay)
Florida at Arizona (Florida)
Atlanta at Colorado (Colorado)
