Card of the Day: Kevin Maas 1990 Leaf #446

on December 8th, 2009 by rosschrisman2003

He was going to be the next Don Mattingly.  Yeah, we all see how well that worked out.  This card was on fire back in 1990.

I just hit for the Cycle with 2009 Topps 206

on December 8th, 2009 by Newspaperman

I can’t stay away from 2009 Topps 206 retail packs. Searched or not, I find myself drawn to those blue wrappers like a piece of metal to a magnet. It’s almost masochistic at this point because I know there is almost a 99 percent chance that I will not pull a relic. What I keep [...]

Box Busters: 2010 Press Pass Racing

on December 8th, 2009 by Tracy Hackler

Beckett Racing brain trust (and we use that term loosely) Tim Trout and Tracy Hackler just can’t drive 55 with an early box of 2010 Press Pass Racing. Run, don’t walk, to check out the video to see what they pulled.

Collectibles Show Lot 1

on December 8th, 2009 by Dan

I picked up all these cards at a Toy and Collectibles show that my main card shop puts on twice a year. I thought it was a pretty good deal. What would you think I paid for four relics of current or future HOFers, two autos of HOFers, a RC of Saba…

Flashback Product of the Week: 2006 Upper Deck Epic

on December 8th, 2009 by rosschrisman2003

‘06 UD Epic was a high-end product that got a lot of heat after it was released.  For one thing its a hit or miss product that features and autograph or relic in each pack.  I remember the big thing collectors were looking for at the time were the bat barrels.  There were some serious [...]

I am happy to have this card in my Eddie Murray collection now.  But I am even happier that I don’t [...]

2009 Topps Nick Esasky

on December 8th, 2009 by JT

You gotta feel bad for Nick Esasky. The guy had a ton of potential, but due to poor coaching and a debilitating health condition, he never blossomed into the player he could have been. The former first round draft pick should have been a first baseman, plain and simple. But Pete Rose was chasing Ty [...]

Sports Memorabilia Auctioneers Struggle to Find Quality Items to Sell

on December 8th, 2009 by Nick Tylwalk

Common sense would suggest that the market for top dollar sports memorabilia would suffer during a recession that’s been deeper and longer than any in decades. One would expect that supply would swamp demand, with plenty of people anxious to dump collectibles for whatever they can get and very few buyers to even out the [...]

Maybe Marvin Miller would fare better in a wet T-shirt …

on December 8th, 2009 by T.S.

What with all the revelations recently about fixed soccer games in Europe and a rogue former NBA referee admitting to various forms of skullduggery, a sordid episode from my own past has been eating at me, prompting a bit of confession of my own.

Thirty-two years ago – in the middle of America’s celebration of our
Bicentennial, for Pete’s sake – I took part in a wet T-shirt contest that I am convinced
ultimately turned out to have been rigged. Wow, I am starting to feel better already.

Oh, I couldn’t prove it, and I took no actual part in the malfeasance,
but that doesn’t change the fact that a young lady who had earned a $200-$300
top prize (I can’t remember the exact amount) didn’t get the dough.

During my college years I had been the manager of a restaurant/night
club/disco called “The Swinging Turtle.” It overlooked Lake Champlain just south of
Plattsburgh, N.Y. When the place was bought by new owners in the fall of 1976, I moved
on to another restaurant.

Later that fall, the new owners held a wet T-shirt contest and asked
me to return as a celebrity judge, which gives you a fair peek into what constitutes
genuine celebrity in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

I do recall that the monetary prize was pretty significant for 1976,
and so I shouldn’t have been surprised that the handsome young woman reportedly from
Boston was selected by the other two judges (names withheld in part because I don’t
remember them, either).

The gal who deserved to win was from nearby Saranac, N.Y., and she had
been informally sponsored by my best friend, a legendary local figure named Larry
Marcotte. He was none too pleased with this gross miscarriage of justice, but he understood
that my vote had at least been untainted by any nefarious considerations.

Speaking of such mundane practices as being willing to reveal ballot
deliberations, do you think any of the guys who voted against the HOF candidacy of
Marvin Miller will ever be man enough to step forward and explain their reasoning?

I am pretty sure that the motivations from the other two judges at “The
Swinging Turtle” were decidedly more noble than those of the HOF voters.
