These pins could be found in boxes of American Tobacco Sweet Caporal tobacco products during the early 20th century. Some pins are rarer than others. There are about 205 pins to a complete set and you’ll find many small and large letter variations. You can get them graded and/or authenticated. I think look cool in [...]

About two weeks ago I obtained a 1961 Topps Jim Gentile card from one of my local card shop’s “Price Friendly” vintage boxes. I purchased the card with the intention of trading it, but later learned a bit about [...]

I posted the following on the etopps message board this evening:
In response to the first etopps telephone chat, Mark Sapir and I have worked together and reached agreement on the process to fight back against etopps sellers who continue to misrepresent the card’s print runs.
We have also reached agreement on the wording of the email that will be sent to ebay to shut down their listing(s). The email will have contact information for several people in Topps, including their General Counsel.
I feel strongly that etoppers who are against these sellers should unite to show strength in numbers. You did this with me when I posted an ebay guide a few years back to warn ebayers about this. Though this guide hasn’t done much and is not the first thing a potential buyer will go to if they want to purchase an etopps in-hand.
I’ve created a group in facebook called the Etopps Watch Group. Since ebay ids will be discussed, I don’t think this MB is appropriate.
I’m not sure if this link will work because I’m still trying to get the hang of using facebook.
If you have trouble with the above link, email me through this message board and I will send you an invite to the facebook group.
Since I’m blocked from facebook at work, please be patient if I do not send you an invite until later in the day.
On facebook, I will provide more information about the group, the process of how etopps sellers will be stopped and together I hope we can find these listings/sellers to shut them down.
And yes, Mark has my support in this and I hope you will too.

Whenever a holiday rolls around, I like to see if there are any cards floating around The Hobby which contain the theme of that specific day. I thought I might have a difficult time with New Year’s, but it wasn’t that hard. Christmas by far is the holiday that has the most trading cards. After [...]

Possibly the most interesting book of the bunch, ‘Sixty Feet, Six Inches’ was co-authored by two of the most amazing baseball talents this game has ever seen – Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson.
These guys have done it all – Hall of Fame induction, World Series heroics, legendary status, and now writing of books!!!
Gibson and Feller [...]

I picked this card up at a local show – I might have overpaid a little bit, but I didn’t have to wait and I didn’t have to pay shipping. I dodged the bullet with 2009 Sweet Spot in that Josh Hamilton didn’t have too many autographs – UD really loaded up on jerseys for [...]

While its facts and stories may be a little outdated since it was printed in 2006, ‘Big League Trivia’ should lend a big hand toward my being able to continue the ‘Did You Know’ series on this blog.

In my garage when I was a kid was this wooden toy truck my grandfather (a really handy guy!) made for my brothers and sisters and me. It was about 4 feet long and 1.5 feet high, and the back lifted up so as to “dump” stuff out of it. (Really, it was so big, we kids could ride in the back!)
Anyhow, one hot summer day, I was playing in there and found in the back of the truck a couple 1970 Topps baseball cards which I suppose my older brother must have bought and stored there in the truck. The only card I recall specifically was a nondescript portrait card of Chicago Cubs outfielder Al Spangler, who had had a few fair years earlier in his career w/ the old Houston Colt 45s. (See old pal Al’s stellar career stats here.) Oh, some dudes have it up in their ebay stores here.
Well, I admired that nothing card, turned it over and found the blurb and stats on the back, and I was hooked. I went to the 7/11 and bought my first cards. The cards had been in that toy truck for a while, so the first cards I bought were now the 1971 Topps baseball cards w/ the tough black borders. I was off and running!

OK, I’ll admit it, I’m nervous. With about a week left to go, I am starting
to worry that there might not be anybody elected from the BBWAA ballot for next year’s
HOF class.
It’s bewildering that the number of worthy candidates should have an
impact on the results of any particular individual’s chances, but it seems to be the
case, and thus the addition of names like Roberto Alomar, Edgar Martinez, Barry Larkin,
Fred McGriff and Andres Galarraga seems ominous for some of the holdovers.
I refer, of course, to Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven,
the two candidates with seemingly the best shot at election after a significant number
of years on the ballot. For the former, this is the 10th try; for Blyleven, the 2010
vote is No. 14, meaning he’ll have but one more crack at BBWAA election if this year’s
tally comes up short.
And I think it might. Depending upon the day you asked me, I would likely
say there are between 7-10 guys on the list who would get my vote, and my fear is
that with that many worthy nominees the votes get spread around so much that perhaps
nobody gets the needed 75 percent.
I am going to blog about the 2010 vote for much of the next few days
leading up to the Jan. 6 announcement, citing some of the individual cases of most
interest to me. In the meantime, it’s worth noting that many of our cherished notions
about magic numbers and hallowed benchmarks need to be re-examined, to say nothing
about the looming (actually already upon us) dilemma about what to do with the steroids
questions.
I hold no illusions that my prognostications are any more valid than
anybody else’s, but if I am going to blog I might as well put something at risk: I
don’t think the 2010 BBWAA vote will push anyone past the 75 percent threshold.
Even as I type it, I hope to heaven I am wrong about my conclusion. No
offense to Doug Harvey and Whitey Herzog, but I’d want to see more folks
on the podium next summer.
More on this on the morrow.

Many have counted Tom Brady and the Patriots out as a serious threat in the Playoffs. However, the most threatening teams in recent history are those that have momentum going into it despite their seeding. The Patriots have won three in a row and crushed the Jacksonville Jaguars 35-7 on Sunday. They will play a tough game in Houston next Sunday with the Texans possibly playing for a spot in the postseason. Brady and the Pats performance in that contest could foreshadow the team’s Playoff chances. As far as Brady’s card go there is little at this point in his career that he could do to nudge most of them much higher. He’s secured his spot in Canton and has a record in the postseason rivaled by few who have ever played the position of quarterback. However, many of Brady’s Rookie Cards can be found for sale at LO book and that certainly seems like a safe bet.
