500 Home Runs: A club forever changed

on January 17th, 2010 by chrisolds

Once upon a time, the 500 Home Run Club was an elite group of baseball players, a small number of sluggers assured of immortality in the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.

on January 17th, 2010 by shanediaz82

Reader Michel from Texas responded to my call to assist with my 09-10 Upper Deck Series 1 hockey set with about 10 cards I needed. I sent 23 09-10 Upper Deck Series 1 cards and a few other random hockey needs. Michel included some surprises in addit…

2000 Future Bee Power League UL box break (pack 1)

on January 17th, 2010 by Jason

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a set that has as great color as this one.  It’s a shame that in only two years, Future Bee would cede the baseball CCG market to Konami (who produced much less visually interesting cards).  A set this nice looking demanded larger images:

Interesting that only two teams are represented in the base cards in the pack.  The set checklist is completely organized by

The Brito of Waterloo

on January 17th, 2010 by Jason

Seen here in his third season in A-level ball, young Bernie still hadn’t quite found his stroke. Waterloo would be a slight promotion for him, but barely keeping his nose above the Mendoza line, he ended up right back down in A- ball in Batavia the following season. Considering today’s state of the farm system, one has to wonder if he’d still have a job if he’d only managed to hit .228

1989 Score Darryl Strawberry

on January 17th, 2010 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

1989 Score Darryl Strawberry
This card offers some of my favorite elements when it comes to design – making this an instant classic for me!!
This list goes like this(in random order):

full body action photo – from the top of the bat to the shoes on his feet
a plain, but not boring design
a baseball-themed graphic containing the [...]

Turk Farrell (#217)

on January 17th, 2010 by Jim from Downingtown

Another lousy hatless photo. Farrell pitched in FIFTY games for the Phillies in 1967 since his acquisition on May 8th. Why aren’t Topps’ photographers EARNING their money?Turk Farrell began his career with the Phillies way back in 1953. After 4 seas…

Final Card: Jim Landis

on January 17th, 2010 by Jim from Downingtown

By the time I started collecting baseball cards in 1967, Jim Landis (#483) was a part-time player at the end of his career. I remember thinking “He wasn’t a starter so he probably wasn’t that good.” What did I know? Little did I realize that he had bee…

Interview with a baseball card. Part one.

on January 17th, 2010 by Dinged Corners

We traded some older Stadium Club cards to a very pleasant gentleman named Don. S., and he sent this (in a perfect ‘we-send-a-small-bunch-we-receive-one-cool-card’ transaction): It’s quite a handsome card of philanthropist Dave Winfield. The Yanke…

Did You Know…

on January 17th, 2010 by 30-Year Old Cardboard

In 1974, Mike Marshall became the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award.

**factoid courtesy of ‘Armchair Reader – Grand Slam Baseball’
My take – While probably not the most impactful reliever, Marshall appeared in 106 games in 1974.  How many of today’s relief pitchers would cry if they had to work that hard??

50 Single Stickers Can’t Be Wrong

on January 17th, 2010 by Ben Henry

I’m a fan of Elvis Presley. It’s the fact that he was a bit of an ass, that he was a drug addict at the end, that he had three TV’s, that he had a Jungle Room at Graceland, that he laughed and talked during live recordings, that he was fond of ridiculo…
