I tell you what, we all know that George Foster looked like a menacing guy.

But so far, of all of the baseball cards that I have collected of him as part of this collection that I am building to pay homage to his great career, this is the one that shows off ‘that look’ the best.

Imagine being a 22-year old relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers making your big league debut and this is waiting for you in the on-deck circle…

When A Random Traffic Stop Turns Into An Encounter With Your Childhood Heroes

I received a call from my best friend this afternoon. Some of you may know him, he goes by the name ‘McGee-Fan51′ on this blog, and he has been with me and ’30-YOC’ since day one.

He lives more than 2,000 miles away from me, but we collect together and share a lot of stories of the guys from our youth on a regular basis.

Anyway, back to the story…

So, I got a call from his this morning and after hearing it, I told him that I needed to publish it on my blog. He was cool with it.

So, here is Gerad’s amazing tale from this morning:

“On today’s date at approximately 0830 hours I was monitoring traffic in the 200 block of Missouri Highway 141 when I observed a white 2011 Audi traveling at a high rate of speed. I clocked the vehicles speed with my radar unit going 20 miles over the posted speed limit.

I activated my emergency equipment and stopped the driver.

As I approached the drivers side of the vehicle I could see that the driver was looking at me through his side mirror coming to realize that this wasn’t just anybody………this was Ozzie Smith #1………..who was watching me as I was walking up to his car!

I confronted The Wizard face to face & stated these three words … “Your My Hero!” He had a huge smile on his face and stated thank you. While he was thanking me I noticed an occupant sitting in the passenger seat. With the sun shining bright in my face and the size of the SUV I had to duck my head down just a tad in order to see the passenger who I immediately recognized as Willie McGee #51! My all time favorite baseball player & Hero!

I went into shock! Worse than a 14 year old girl meeting Justin Beiber. O.K. well maybe not that bad, but I was beside myself. A policeman wearing a bullet proof vest and carrying a Glock pistol doing a dangerous job right? Never knowing who your coming into contact with. Always keeping your guard up. Not on this stop! I knew these guys. I had been fans of theirs since 1982 when I was 6 years old. I knew more about them than I knew about my own grandparents.

So here it goes…

I put my hands over my mouth and said “O my God Willie McGee”.

I couldn’t believe it. My Man. My User-Name “McGee-Fan51″. My Favorite number 51. My Hero sitting in a beautiful Audi right before my eyes. Not at a baseball card show, or at Busch Stadium. But on South Bound MO Highway 141. In my town. On the mean streets of STL. On my streets. On my turf.

What should I say, what should I do, how should I act?

Well let me tell you… I said very few words.

I said this.

“Willie McGee you are My Hero.” “I love you guys.” “Thank you so much for what you have brought to St. Louis and what you’ve done for me as a fan.”

They both put out their hands & thanked me. After a firm and Honorable hand shake I walked back to my police car shaking my head thinking to myself “I’m I dreaming?” I walked away from my two hero’s. My two favorite STL Cardinals of all time. My two favorite baseball players of all time. And forgot to ask for their autographs!

I may have forgotten to ask them to sign a business card, but I do have the traffic stop on camera. And although you cannot see Mr. Smith or Mr. McGee you can hear Ozzie laughing and saying thank you.

Brian I will do my best to burn a copy of this stop and submit it to you. Feel free to post it on your blog. I think you’ll get a kick out of me & my reaction too.

It’s not everyday you get to meet one of your hero’s. Today I met both of mine. And Ill never forget it.”

Pretty cool, huh???

These two beauties come from special game giveaway sets – one is from 1990 and one is from 1991.

Marathon Oil was the sponsor of these game-day giveaways, and the cards look pretty good. They are oversized too.

I already owned this baseball card, but I needed a second one.

The first time I scooped this one up it was because I was building the 1984 Topps Highlights set.

And since I am a dedicated, and sometimes obsessive collector, I cannot pull from one set to add to another.

So, I bought another one.

This one will rest comfortably within my Johnny Bench collection.

Rickey Henderson 2001 Fleer Tradition – YUCK!!!!

I keep buying Rickey Henderson cards ‘on the blind’. And I keep getting disappointed.

Sure, I know that Rickey played for what felt like a new team every year in the late 1990′s and into the 2000′s, but I guess I just keep expecting great looking baseball cards regardless of the team colors he’s sporting.

My latest pick-up is from the 2001 Fleer Tradition set and it features Rickey in his Mariners uniform. Yes, Rickey played for the Seattle Mariners.

And it is pretty bad…

So, from here on out, I make this pledge – ‘I will only collect baseball cards of Rickey Henderson in which he is wearing his Oakland Athletics or New York Yankees colors’.

Amen.

Happy Anniversary Roger Clemens!!!

On this day back in 1984, Roger Clemens won his first major league baseball game.

With his team on the road in Minnesota, the Boston Red Sox were battling the Minnesota Twins. Clemens needed just 131 minutes to earn victory number 1 of his career.

Against a solid Twins team, Clemens pitched 7 strong innings in the 5-4 win. He allowed 7 hits and 4 runs during the contest. He also showed off his ability to dominate hitters with his powerful pitching and sharp control as he struck out 7 batters while walking just 1.

Happy Anniversary Mr. Clemens. Win #1 of your 354 career victories came on this day 26 years ago!!!

Fergie Jenkins 1977 Burger Chef Disc – Front & Back

We’re going back to the 1970′s this time. 1977 to be exact!

I had never seen these cards before until this one of Fergie Jenkins came across Ebay.

I quickly bought it and am now happy to show it off to you.

I was immediately intrigued by the card, so I sought out some more info.

This is courtesy of Beckett:

The individual discs measure approximately 2 1/2″ in diameter and contain a burger-related caricature on the reverse. There were nine discs on each tray; five on the front and four on the back. Each tray contained one team and there were 24 different trays, obviously one for each team. On the tray the copyright notice indicates 1977. The player photos are shown without team logos on their caps. We have sequenced this set in the following order: Houston (1-9), St. Louis (10-18), Texas (19-27), Boston (28-36), Baltimore (37-45), Minnesota (46-54), Cleveland (55-63), Kansas City (64-72), Chicago White Sox (73-81), Milwaukee (82-90), Detroit (91-99), San Francisco (100-108), Oakland (109-117), California (118-126), San Diego (127-135), New York Mets (136-144), Los Angeles (145-153), Montreal (154-162), Philadelphia (163-171), New York Yankees (172-180), Pirates (181-189), Chicago Cubs (190-198), Cincinnati (199-207), Atlanta (208-216). No 1977 expansion teams were featured in this set. Complete Panels are worth twice the amount of the values for each team.
