Boxbusters Stl Hotstove Update

on January 5th, 2009 by Ross

The Cardinals have signed lefty reliever Royce Ring to a one year deal. Ring was drafted in 2002 by the White Sox and has spent time with the Mets, Padres, and Braves. Last year with Atlanta, Ring posted an 8.46 ERA in 22 1/3 innings.

Boxbusters Stl Hot Stove Update

on December 31st, 2008 by Ross

Aaron Miles is no longer a Redbird. Miles accepted a two-year deal with the Cubs for a reported $4.9 million. The Cardinals non-tendered the infielder earlier this month and Miles was less than pleased. “I was a little surprised,” Miles said. “I thought, given the situation and how well I did last year, that I was part of the team over there. Financially, I understand why they did it. It was still kind of shocking, because I figured I had a place over there. In the end, they non-tendered me two years in a row, and I felt that the attraction to me being there wasn’t as big as it was before.”This was not the only loss for the Cardinals however. Brian Fuentes signed a two-year deal with an option for a third worth a guaranteed $17.5 million with the Angels. Fuentes was supposed to be the Cardinals “top priority” this offseason.

Boxbusters Mail Call

on December 29th, 2008 by Ross

Daniel from Saints of the Cheap Seats sent over a package today containing over 30 2008 Topps U&H that I needed and some other goodies. Two new Carp cards for the collection - sweet! Hey speaking of, does that 2002 Fleer Tradition Chris Carpenter card remind you of something…

Huh, that’s funny….. Those seem to look an awful lot alike don’t they? What about the backs?

Well at least they did something different there lol.

Included with the loose singles Daniel sent, were a couple of interesting packs of football cards called Action Packed. They are from 1989 and are from HI-PRO MKTG., INC out of Northbrook, IL.

As you can see on the package it says these are a regional series and each pack contains 6 player cards and 1 stadium hologram. Let’s see what these bad boys look like shall we?

These cards are foil and are embossed and they are GOLD. Does it get any better than that? 1989 was rockin’. It appears you can purchase a box of these cards today for under ten dollars. The backs have a spot for an autograph and if you look on eBay you will see some of this variety.

Another interesting thing about these cards is on the back of each pack and on the stadium hologram there is a 1-900 number. It is called the Sports Collector’s Hotline and is only $1.00 for the first minute and $.50 for each additional minute. This hotline proivded “up to date information on Football Cards, Baseball Cards, and Hobby investments - updated three times a week. Call often.” Yes it really says call often on the pack.

Great stuff Daniel! Thanks for the package and keep an eye out for your return package.

For Dinged Corners Pt. II

on December 24th, 2008 by Ross

This is the tree at my Mom’s house, where we celebrate Christmas Eve together. My immediate family and friends join us for dinner and gifts.

Gathering around for some appetizers before dinner…..

The weather has not changed much. We got no rain, sleet or snow today and other than a drop in temperature nothing new to report outside.

View from my Mom’s back patio. Too cold for swimming but if you can tell from my blurry photo there are some xmas lights in the background at least! Merry Christmas !!

For Dinged Corners

on December 24th, 2008 by Ross

Here is a shot of the inside of MY HOUSE on Christmas Eve. Our tree is not very big, we have a pretty small place. Luckily we celebrate at my Mom’s house so there is a little more room for everybody.

This is a shot of my backyard from my patio. There is a birdbath in the photo and just past that on the right is my fire pit. The weather here today is so so. The temperature is about 35 and it is currently partly cloudy. It rained yesterday which turned in to sleet last night but today it warmed up some so no ice. I will post more pictures from other stops as the holiday continues.
Merry Christmas

Enough is enough

on December 22nd, 2008 by Ross

This article is in response to comments that were made in an article titled 3 Signs Beckett is Getting Desperate over at Wax Heaven.

After reading Mario’s article and some comments, I made the following comment:

freeandylaroche said:

“And in the end, if you have such a problem with Topps/UD/Donruss et. al. sending Beckett loaded boxes, then stop supporting them. Isn’t that the heart of the matter here? Why bother complaining about Beckett getting loaded boxes? Why not complain about the manufacturers sending them loaded boxes in the first place? Where is the Topps boycott? The Donruss boycott?”

That’s all I have been trying to say with my posts related to Beckett on Boxbusters and it appears some have mislabeled me and or my blog as a “Beckett apologists” People need to realize that Beckett could not be doing the things everyone is complaining about without the support it receives from the big three. Just because I don’t want to whine and moan and make up silly graphics about them doesn’t mean I support what they do. It just means I think your fight would be better served if you took your problems with Beckett to Topps/Donruss/UD and the others paying the bills and maybe did so in more of a professional manner. How serious can you expect to be taken when half of your rants contain a ridiculous amount of cuss words and silly threats? Like the “banner” Beckett put up in “response” to the one that was made by Dave….. do you really think that is an accomplishment? I view it as Beckett making fun of the “call to arms” and all the other nonsense going on lately.

In response to the above comment I made the following comment was posted:

“How serious can you expect to be taken when half of your rants contain a ridiculous amount of cuss words and silly threats?

I AM THUPER CEREAL.

Manbearpig is out there and we need to get him.”

Such intelligence in that statement… I just don’t know where to begin. I mean am I supposed to take that as I am the dumb hick from IL who inbreeds? Or wait, I know I’m the dumb redneck who hunts for Bigfoot and inbreeds, right?

Enough is enough. You want to call people at Beckett names, whatever. You want to “label” people that’s cool. You want to be a tough guy and cuss on your blog, whatever. You want to call me stupid or not agree with me that’s fine, too. Where I draw the line is taking personal shots at me for expressing an opinion. Not only is that childish and just plain IGNORANT it just shows what kind of bigot you really are. I mean why not stop and take five or ten minutes and come up with something intelligent to say in response instead of taking a personal shot at a fellow collector? Is it because that would require some intelligence and perhaps a post without every other word being an insult or the f-bomb?

For all the negative you claim is in the hobby you sure don’t seem to mind adding to it.

Go ahead and post another insulting comment below it’s open.

Stupid is as Stupid does

on December 20th, 2008 by Ross

After reading about Beckett all day and everyone’s various issues with them, I have come to a conclusion that I feel most may not like. You can whine, complain and cuss all day long at how Beckett does this and Beckett does that. You can boycott them and threaten them with these call to arms and these banners but do you honestly think it’s going to do any good at all? I for one, don’t think it will. Do you want to know why?

BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS NOT JUST WITH BECKETT MEDIA.

Seriously guys and gals, can we grow up and admit that without the support that Beckett receives from our beloved card companies, they would cease to exist in the capacity they do today. PERIOD. If Beckett was not getting all the support they do from the big three do you honestly think they would be able to get away with half the stuff they do? I can assure you the average collector who carries a subscription to their magazine is not making all this possible. Without the support of Topps, Donruss, and Upper Deck - Beckett would not be able to operate like the “arrogant gods” that they have been labeled.

I don’t care how much you think you know about the hobby or how long you have been in it collecting. If your naive enough to believe that Beckett is the sole issue here then keep on writing your colorful AB posts and see how far you get with that. I would be willing to bet not much will change besides the titles of your posts. In my opinion the only way to make a difference in the way Beckett operates is to get them where it hurts the most - with the card companies that pay the bills. If everyone “aimed the barrel” at the companies paying Beckett’s advertising bills and at the companies providing “loaded” boxes then I think you’re more likely to get something accomplished. I look at it kind of like I do the “drug problem” in America. You can bust all the low level dealers you want but until you find the source and cut it off then your wasting your time. Same thing applies here people, we can post all these AB messages, form little armies or boycotts or whatever you want to call them against Beckett but until the companies supplying and supporting them start feeling some heat I doubt much will change, if anything at all.

What’s YOUR Problem with Beckett ?

on December 20th, 2008 by Ross

After reading numerous posts that are in the AB (anti-beckett) category I started really trying to figure out what is the problem with Beckett? I mean as most of you know, I am just getting back in to the hobby and it seems every few weeks someone is bashing Beckett. In some posts, it seems to be the fact that they receive “loaded” boxes for review. My issue with this line of thought is this: Is Beckett loading the boxes themselves? I am pretty sure they are not, so why all the anger towards them? Is Beckett making false claims about “hits” you can pull in the product? Again, I’m pretty sure this one is a no. So Shouldn’t you be mad at the companies that are providing these “loaded” boxes for review not the company opening the boxes up?

Some make the argument that they are AB because they are not providing biased reviews of products. This to me is the most legitimate argument of any. I mean obviously Beckett is not going to just bash companies left and right that provide them with free product so sure they are biased. But what company that reviews products, who receives those products free, is not going to be slightly biased? The last time I checked, Beckett does not claim to operate like Consumer Reports.

Some make the argument that they are AB because they profit from these “loaded” boxes they receive. Well, to me this one makes no sense at all. I mean, seriously what the hell else are they supposed to do? I mean they are a company and do have to make money like everyone else, right? Seriously, if they ARE getting loaded boxes from manufacturers, wouldn’t they be stupid not to take advantage of it on some level?

There is also the argument that Beckett is just poorly ran and arrogant. Now here is where you may be on to something. It has become increasingly difficult to ignore from all aspects and really for someone like myself, who is returning to the hobby, it is a real turn off. After reading some past posts about some of the things that are going on within the hobby it really becomes difficult to say otherwise. I still feel the card companies are just as much to blame for this, however. If they did not enable Beckett then Beckett would not have the resources or the goods to conduct business with, at least not at the extent to which they operate now anyway. As it stands now, the card companies are condoning this behavior are they not?

Lastly, I have heard some make the argument that they are AB because their price guides are worthless and they are out of touch with true market value, etc. This is another argument that holds weight, IMO. It is true that Beckett should only be used as a GUIDE for prices, but at times, even attempting to do that can be difficult. With that being said however, they do claim to be nothing more than a “guide.”

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I look at Beckett the same way I do pretty much all the magazines I read - as entertainment first and foremost. I don’t view their box breaks and see some crazy pull and instantly think I can get that if I buy those cards. I don’t read their reviews and say oh man I gotta have that. I look at it as entertainment. If I see something that perks an interest then sure I will see what they have to say about it but I also take the time to see what others have said, then I make MY OWN OPINION. Does anyone do that anymore or do they just rely on a video box break and some dude’s review to do it for them?

Don’t take this article the wrong way - I am not suggesting you should use Beckett nor am I attempting to take “sides.” I am just trying to figure out what in your eyes Beckett is doing wrong. I have no position as to what they should or shouldn’t be doing simply because of the fact I really could care less what they say or do. Their opinion does not have any influence on the products I purchase, never has. I tend to think for myself and look at multiple sources of information before jumping to foolish conclusions about a product I intend to purchase.

Christmas Contest

on December 17th, 2008 by Ross

This one is gonna be fun.

If you read my blog bat around article on my centerpiece, then you know I have ticket stubs to game 4 of the World Series from 2006 framed. My precious keepsakes are hung on the wall as a constant reminder of what a great time that was.

So what the hell does that have to do with a contest you wonder? Well, see I was thinking…….

Since my last guessing contest seemed to be the most popular so far I thought it was time for another one. Only this time instead of guessing how many page views I had in a month you gotta guess what Section # is on my framed Game 4 ticket stubs.

The prize will be a surprise. Kinda like your Christmas presents were when you were a kid, remember? I will package the cards as an xmas present and ship the package out to the winner.

Sound like fun? As usual - ONE guess per person and just leave your guess in the comments section below. I will end the contest one week from today at midnight CST. Thanks for playing and Merry Christmas from Boxbusters!

Toys for Tots

on December 16th, 2008 by Ross

I know everyone is in the same spot for Christmas this year. Not a lot of $$ to go around and maybe some have to sacrifice those BIG gifts for something a little smaller. What if you were a kid and KNEW you were not getting anything. ZIP. Nothing under the tree - No Santa - no presents - NADA. How bad do you think that would make you feel? I know how bad I would feel that is why EVERY YEAR I give SOMETHING to this foundation. They do something GREAT for KIDS.

If you have a local Toys-R-Us or another retail store that accepts donations do yourself a favor and grab a toy and throw it in the bin. Instead of buying that next pack of cards or that extra little gift for so and so just think about giving something to these guys first. It doesn’t have to be the latest greatest thing. Grab a $10 stuffed animal or some Hot Wheels - anything helps and its a great cause.

If you don’t have any shopping left to do or are just lazy, you can also DONATE ONLINE so no excuses Scrooge.

Blog Bat Around: Centerpiece

on December 16th, 2008 by Ross

Can the centerpiece of a collection be a simple story? As much as I want to claim a card or a seat back or an autograph as my centerpiece, I truly believe it happens to be simply words and a place in time.

See, back in 2006 when the Cardinals beat the Tigers in the fall classic I was fortunate enough to get a ticket to game 4 in St. Louis. The weather that year was just horrible, cold, rainy and just no fun for baseball but no matter what the conditions were I was going to this game. As luck would have it the day of game 4 was just miserable. It was raining and cold and as the day went on the obvious started creeping in. “We are going to get rained out,” I thought as we made our way over to the ballpark. Just my luck, right? Great seat to Game 4 of the World Series and I’m gonna watch it rain instead. Wonderful. After about 2 hours of sitting around the ballpark and buying up various World Series merchandise, we heard it. The game has been called. RAIN OUT.

SONOFA I thought…. NOW WHAT?

Well as it turns out, this was the best rain out in history, at least for me. See, what MLB decided to do was to swap games for the rain out. So my Game 4 ticket was now a valid ticket for Game 5. This seems like a minor detail but in fact it was just the opposite. See, the Cardinals ended up winning Game 4, which Game 5 ticket holders saw. This made the series 3-1 and turned Game 5 in to a chance for the Redbirds to close the deal - at HOME.

So now my rain out game 4 ticket is a chance to see the Cardinals win the World Series at home in our brand new ballpark. Is this really happening? No way I’m gonna get this lucky. I bet the Tigers will end up spoiling this one. I’m just not that lucky. Another rain out, a close loss, something was gonna screw this up. I just knew it.

It rained pretty much all day that day and I just knew it was going to happen all over again. It was gonna get rained out again and I was going to end up getting tickets to Game 6. Then the Cards would win in 5 and I won’t get to see a single game. That’s more like it. I was convinced my fate was sealed. Then, just like that, it stopped. The rain quit and the hope began creeping in. We do have a brand new stadium….. it’s gotta drain well… right? They don’t want to rainout ANOTHER WS game…..

As I sat in my seat watching the celebration on the field after Wainwright struck out Inge, I still couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know if I should run and buy a lotto ticket or if I should be making funeral plans…. this just doesn’t happen to me.

By the time I got home and absorbed it all I was still stunned. I just saw something I may never see again, live and in person. Even if the Cardinals make it back to the World Series again before I die, what are the chances they are going to do it at home? Further more what are the chances I am going be lucky enough to attend? I would say slim to none but something tells me to keep a little hope up as I stare at my framed Game 4 tickets stubs, you just never know what might happen.

Boxbusters.net2008 Donruss Threads Football Hobby Box

on December 15th, 2008 by Ross

It really is a shame Donruss has no MLB license. If they could have made the baseball cards look as good as these football cards they really might have something. The use of the team’s logo on the upper left and right hand corner is a nice touch and would have been a nice addition to the baseball line. Plus the fact that the photos do not require “touching up” to hide logo’s, etc really helps things out too.

I still am not fond of having college kids on the Gridiron Kings cards but the cards themselves I really like. A LOT. This is a platinum version of Limas Sweed from Texas. The platinum parallel of the Gridiron Kings are #’d to 25.

Sharp looking card IMO. In addition to the Gridiron Kings inserts I also pulled 2 Century Stars, 1 Century Legend, 1 Dynasty and 1 Generations. I am not real fond of the Century Stars cards but the Dynasty and Generations inserts are pretty cool.

Back Side:

I also pulled 4 Rookies, 2 being the regular rookie hobby parallels #’d to 999. The others were a Platinum Century Proof #’d to 25 and a Bronze Century Proof #’d to 250. (Note the different colors of the ROOKIE - top left bronze/top right platinum)

Back Side:

Last but not least the “hits” of the box. On average you are supposed to pull 4 Autographs or Memorabilia Cards from one hobby box. How did we do this time?

The Rookie Collection card is really a pretty slick looking card. Only problem was the one I got was damaged. The clear layer on top of the card was peeling back and is lifted up off the card on one side and peeling back. The stock itself is not damaged in any way so I assume this was something that should have been caught BEFORE the card left the factory. The Winslow Jr. card is a PATCH card. It is pure white but there is some stitching that you can see. Up next we have the Willie Parker jersey card and the Davone Bess AUTO. The Parker card is #’d to 250 and the Bess AUTO is #’d to 999. If you can not tell from the scan the AUTO is not on card - it is a sticker. For some reason though, it doesn’t seem to stick out like a sore thumb like some other sticker auto’s out there.

Complete Product Information: Donruss.com

Complete Results:

Base Cards: 102

Doubles: 0

Rookies: 4

Inserts: 10

Jersey: 2

Patch: 1

Auto: 1

Mail Call

on December 15th, 2008 by Ross

A package arrived today from David P. from Brooklyn, NY with some 2008 Masterpieces that I needed for the base set. David contacted me awhile back and asked if I was still looking for these cards. I said I was but was having a little trouble locating what David collects. He said not to worry about it and just asked for an address. I did end up locating some Dodgers to send him but David generously sent these cards not expecting much in return.

David sent 18 cards that I needed including the Fukudome RC. Thanks David, I did locate about 20 or so Dodgers to send you - your return package will be going out first thing on Tuesday!

Site Update

on December 13th, 2008 by Ross

I have to apologize to Cards on Cards, I had no idea this blog was up. Recently, I had started another blog to display my Cardinals cards and called it Cards of Cards. I will be taking this blog down for now and will figure out another way to display my Cardinals cards. I apologize to the owner of Cards on Cards - I did not mean to “copy” you or your site in any way.

Boxbusters.net2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Football

on December 12th, 2008 by Ross

I really like these cards. The vast number of different colors of framed parallels can be a bit confusing but that seems to be the norm anymore. Overall these cards are great though. Some of the “scenes” that were selected for the cards really help you identify with them. Not being a huge football fan myself, I immediately recognized several of the images and that really makes opening these cards fun.

2008 UD Masterpieces Football Base Card

Now the not so good. I had damaged cards in this box of Masterpieces, just as I did in the 2008 Baseball that I purchased. This seems to be more of a trend with these cards than a coincidence and that bothers me. These cards do not appear to bleed as the Baseball did but 2 of the Framed cards I pulled were damaged - BAD. Both were SP - one was to #’d to 50 and the other was only #’d to 10. Both are damaged in the same fashion which makes me assume that this was done before they left the factory. That’s just sorry. There is no excuse for cards this badly damaged to leave the factory. NONE. Whats that thing they call it….. Quality Control? Perhaps you guys and gals at Upper Deck should look in to that a little more closely? This is the THIRD box of cards I have purchased from your company that have contained damaged cards. The 2008 Upper Deck Ballpark Collection had cards replaced, the 2008 Masterpieces Baseball had bleeders and damaged framed cards and now this box.

Damaged Cards: Urlacher #’d to 50/Favre #’d to 10 ! :(

OT: Randomizer and Recording

on December 12th, 2008 by Ross

If you use the website Random.org for contests and are recording yourself doing so with a camcorder then pay attention - this is for YOU. Please, for the love of god, put away your camcorder and read this. The quality of the video is terrible and it’s really not worth watching. Your wasting my time and yours. There is a much easier way to do this and the quality, well take a look for yourself:

See how you can actually read the list? Amazing, huh?

This is accomplished by using OPEN SOURCE software called CamStudio. This software is free for you to use and best of all IT WORKS. If you want to record something off of your computer - then this is the way to go.

I will be posting things like this on my personal blog: simplymadd.com in the future.
