Woo hoo! My Evan Longoria collection hits 100!

on February 19th, 2009 by Dave

Today is a historic day for my Evan Longoria card collection.  I received my 99th and 100th different Evan Longoria cards in today’s mail.  Both were cards that I recently purchased on eBay, and both are autograph cards, bringing me up to 25 different Longoria autographs – one fourth of my entire collection!
Here are today’s [...]

My continuing adventure with Razor

on February 18th, 2009 by Dave

Lots of people on the internet have been talking about Razor over the last couple of months, and most of what they’re saying is not very good.  Sure, the guy who pulled a George Washington cut signature from a pack of Razor’s Cut Signature Oval Office edition (albeit a $2500 pack) is probably thrilled with [...]

This is Part 2 of a series of posts featuring some amazing cards of legendary players that I have recently acquired for reasonable prices.  You can see the first post here.  Here is the second card that I want to show off:

This card is from 2003 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts and it contains a [...]

Spring has sprung!

on February 17th, 2009 by Dave

All is right with the world again, now that spring training has begun across Major League Baseball.  It’s hard to believe that it’s that time of year already.  Finally, baseball fans can focus on their favorite players, their favorite teams, and the upcoming 2009 season instead of worrying about what team will sign Manny Ramirez [...]

New Rays announcer is named

on February 14th, 2009 by Dave

One of the biggest questions of the offseason for Tampa Bay Rays fans has finally been answered.  Ever since Joe Magrane left his job as the Rays TV analyst to join MLB Network, the Rays and FSN Florida have been searching for a replacement to join Dewayne Staats in the broadcast booth.  Today, we found [...]

9 more days…

on February 14th, 2009 by Dave

Only 9 more days until the most anticipated (by me) baseball card product of the year is released – 2009 Topps Heritage!
I ordered two hobby boxes from Captain Collect on eBay today, and hopefully I’ll have them in my hands as soon as possible after the release date.  I am psyched!  I will open the [...]

The best Upper Deck X card that you’ll ever see

on February 13th, 2009 by Dave

So we all know that Upper Deck X is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad product.  It was quite possibly the very worst baseball card product of 2008, and Upper Deck will continue to satisfy what they apparently believe is a strong demand for ugly, uncreative, and worthless cards in 2009 by releasing a [...]

Blog Used Cards

on February 13th, 2009 by Dave

In my last post, I mentioned that I’d be selling my graded 1995 Topps Stadium Club Virtual Reality Members Only card of Don Mattingly now that I owned an ungraded copy.  I called it a “blog used card”.  Anyway, check out the awesome creativity from Travis at Punk Rock Paint:

I burst out laughing when I [...]

dayf is very wise

on February 12th, 2009 by Dave

I’m sure that many people will agree with the title of this post.  This guy is a very wise man:

There are many examples of the wisdom of dayf from Cardboard Junkie that I could write about; he’s like an encyclopedia of card collecting information.  But what prompted me to write this was a comment that [...]

Blog Bat Around #4: What’s truly valuable?

on February 11th, 2009 by Dave

I’d like to thank Dinged Corners for hosting the 4th Blog Bat Around!  The question is very thought provoking.  What cards will be valuable in ten years and are worthy of being bought and held?
Collectors nowadays tend to be very cynical about the future value of their cards.  Many of us grew up in the [...]

B.J. Upton in national TV ad (and Ryan Howard too)

on February 11th, 2009 by Dave

Check it out – B.J. Upton is starring in a new national TV commercial for Dick’s and Adidas with Ryan Howard:

It’s awesome to see any player on the Rays get national exposure like this.  That doesn’t happen very often, but now that they’ve been to the World Series, I should get used to this sort [...]

The best deal in the hobby right now

on February 10th, 2009 by Dave

I recently opened the hobby box of 2007 Upper Deck SP Rookie Edition baseball cards that I got for free with my order from Dave & Adam’s Card World in December.  Unfortunately, the promotion that offered the free hobby box ended a while ago, but you can still find these boxes for about $25 each, [...]

My thoughts on the A-Rod situation

on February 9th, 2009 by Dave

So I heard the news just as everyone else did on Saturday.  Somebody leaked that Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod) had tested positive for steroids in a supposedly confidential test in 2003 before baseball’s steroid testing program was enacted.  My immediate thoughts after hearing the news were as follows:

Nobody should ever doubt Jose Canseco again.  Canseco is [...]

A couple of awesome Evan Longoria cards

My Evan Longoria collection has now reached 92 different cards, surpassing the number of Tim Lincecum cards that Bailey from The Nennth Inning has.  Here are a couple of recent acquisitions that I wanted to share on my blog…
First, here is Longoria’s exclusive mini from 2008 Allen & Ginter:

An elusive Don Mattingly card is found

on February 8th, 2009 by Dave

It feels very, very good to announce that I have finally succeeded in tracking down a Don Mattingly card that has been elusive to me for many years, a 1995 phone card made by Classic:

I first found out about this card sometime in the summer of 2003 when I was looking for Mattingly cards that [...]

The 2009 National in Cleveland

on February 7th, 2009 by Dave

So I am tentatively planning to be in Cleveland between July 29 – August 2 this year.  One of my wife’s best friends lives up there, and there’s a lot to do in the Cleveland area.  There’s Lake Erie, the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Cedar Point – an amusement park that has the [...]

An awesome addition to my collection

on February 7th, 2009 by Dave

Continuing with the theme of buying cards that I really want instead of spending a lot of money on boxes of cards that I’ll be disappointed with, check out a card that I recently bought on eBay and received earlier this week:

That’s an autograph of one of my heroes, Keith Olbermann, #71/100, from 2009 Topps [...]

A solution to my group break problem?

on February 4th, 2009 by Dave

When I wrote recently about my bad luck in group breaks, I got a very interesting comment from Dusty of the Need Mo Morneau blog.  He suggested that I try a group break that is “by hit” instead of “by team”.  That way, everyone in the break gets at least one hit, so you won’t [...]

Super Bore XLIII

on February 2nd, 2009 by Dave

So I made the mistake of watching the Super Bowl last night.  I’m still wondering why I even bothered.  I can’t imagine a matchup that I’d be more apathetic about than the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Arizona Cardinals.  But like most Americans, I feel some sort of obligation to watch the Super Bowl every year.
I [...]

Massive Trade Post – Part 1

on January 31st, 2009 by Dave

I’ve fallen ridiculously behind in posting about recent card trades that I’ve made.  So, instead of writing individual posts about each trade, I’m going to consolidate it all into two posts.  Here it goes…
1. Almost a month ago, I worked out a trade with Chris from Stale Gum.  I sent 29 cards from 2008 Goudey [...]

The awesomest rookie card ever!

on January 31st, 2009 by Dave

I’ve never been a Jason Giambi fan.  I didn’t like him during his original stint with the A’s, I liked him even less when he signed with the Yankees, and I absolutely despised him when I found out that he was a steroid user.  But when I read about his rookie card in this post [...]

1984 Donruss Video Rack Pack Break!

on January 29th, 2009 by Dave

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I recently purchased a rack pack of 1984 Donruss baseball cards.  I finally got around to opening it on video today.  It was quite a thrill since 1984 Donruss is arguably the best looking set of the 1980s, and it’s unquestionably the top set of the first half [...]

To crack open the slab or not, that is the question

on January 29th, 2009 by Dave

I’m no stranger to PSA graded cards.  I own a bunch of them, and the vast majority of them are vintage cards made before 1980, along with some major rookie cards from the 1980s and early 1990s.  I’ve acquired a few graded Don Mattingly cards in the past, but only because I couldn’t find ungraded [...]

Who is Joe Collector?

In June 2008, Gellman from Sports Cards Uncensored wrote a very entertaining post in which he coined the term “Joe Collector”.  The term immediately caught fire and soon it was being used in card blogs all over the internet.  Gellman eventually had to retire it because it was frequently being misused to characterize certain types [...]
