If the Super Bowl has become a ritual in America’s culture, so has the preparations we make to see it on television each year.
In the media, we’re already hearing about ads that are too controversial or are supposed to have the most buzz. The Who will perform during halftime. People are planning how they’ll see the game and how they’ll be entertaining at home.
The coolest preparation I’ve ever heard of for the Super Bowl came from an ebay buyer. More than 2 years ago, I sold a single-pack hobby box to a guy. When I shipped the box to him, I said in my email I wished him good luck in whatever he pulls.
To my surprise, he replied to my email. He told me throughout the year he buys packs and boxes of football cards and waits until the Super Bowl to open them, one at a time, throughout the game.
While the Super Bowl hype builds around us, etopps is offering its customers 25 chances to snag a coveted Troy Aikman Allen & Ginter Super Bowl autographed card tomorrow at 3PM EST for a mere $79.99.
Since Aikman is a recent Hall-of-Famer and lauded by fans of “American’s Team,” it will not be a surprise if this offering sells out within a minute or two after it becomes available.
Considering the 2007 IPOs of this set have all gone up in price and supply has dried up (the last in-port Aikman was listed a month ago, btw), there’s an especially high demand for this, autographed or not.
And the autograph is a nice one. It’s not “TA” with his jersey number and it’s not squeezed on the card or smudged. It’s done well if the scan that I placed in this post is any indication of what 25 lucky so-and-so’s will be getting by mail.
Kudos first of all goes to etopps for offering this treat and the timing couldn’t be better for Dallas, Super Bowl, Aikman, football or etopps autograph collecting fans.
I don’t see this card having a problem selling on the secondary market if any of the 25 decide to sell it. Allen & Ginter cards are known for baseball so for regular cardboard collecting auto buyers, this could be a worthwhile investment.
A couple of things I saw on ebay. His auto holds more value when the card has something added to it whether it’s a swatch of his jersey or there’s another auto on the card. Both sell well on ebay. If I had a price, I would guess the auto could easily sell for $200 on ebay but I’ve been wrong plenty of times and I hate predicting.
Good luck if want to buy the card tomorrow. There will be plenty of unlucky etoppers tomorrow at 3:05pm. Hopefully you won’t be one of them.

It’s nice to see another football autograph offering from etopps, and even nicer to have another Allen & Ginter Super Bowl Champions offering from the first set. It wasn’t as if this set needed a boost. The value of this set has skyrocketed in the past year. The John Elway card was already at $50 before this offering was posted yesterday on the etopps home page.
This offering would have been a nice belated Christmas present if it had been offered 3 weeks ago, giving us a chance to have it shipped before the upcoming Super Bowl.
The autograph is being offered tomorrow at 3PM EST for $79.99 a pop and only one can be bought per account for a total of 50 being available.
While the last autograph did not sell out immediately due to IT problems on Christmas Eve, this one should not have a problem.
What I also like about autographs of retired players is their value will not diminish unless of course they did something that makes them look bad as we’ve seen with Tiger Woods and retired baseball players like Clemens. Since Elway is a top-notch person, I don’t think you have much to worry about. There are a lot of Elway fans and this card with his autograph should make the die-hards drool at least a bit.
When doing a search on ebay for “Elway auto,” I found 100 listings. That’s quite a lot considering we’re in the middle of the worst recession since World War II and unemployment is at 10% nationwide. There seems to be a lot of Elway fans selling and buying his autograph on cards whether it’s on a jersey card, some other kind of auto card or a plain ol’ sticker auto. Most of the ones shown in completed listings sell between $100 and $200.
Mostly likely this card will sell in this range on ebay. The first few will probably sell more but most likely you’ll make a profit for a long time to come. It’s a stead, solid investment and for an Elway fan, it’s a solid buy for their collection and for drooling over.

I posted the following on the etopps message board this evening:
In response to the first etopps telephone chat, Mark Sapir and I have worked together and reached agreement on the process to fight back against etopps sellers who continue to misrepresent the card’s print runs.
We have also reached agreement on the wording of the email that will be sent to ebay to shut down their listing(s). The email will have contact information for several people in Topps, including their General Counsel.
I feel strongly that etoppers who are against these sellers should unite to show strength in numbers. You did this with me when I posted an ebay guide a few years back to warn ebayers about this. Though this guide hasn’t done much and is not the first thing a potential buyer will go to if they want to purchase an etopps in-hand.
I’ve created a group in facebook called the Etopps Watch Group. Since ebay ids will be discussed, I don’t think this MB is appropriate.
I’m not sure if this link will work because I’m still trying to get the hang of using facebook.
If you have trouble with the above link, email me through this message board and I will send you an invite to the facebook group.
Since I’m blocked from facebook at work, please be patient if I do not send you an invite until later in the day.
On facebook, I will provide more information about the group, the process of how etopps sellers will be stopped and together I hope we can find these listings/sellers to shut them down.
And yes, Mark has my support in this and I hope you will too.

After months of hibernation, the etopps autograph program has returned with an offering of 50 2001 Reggie Wayne cards at $29.99 each tomorrow, Christmas Eve, at 3pm EST.
Yes, it has been quite awhile since an autographed card was offered. More have been offered in the catalog this year than new ones and we all know why. With 10% nationwide unemployment, etopps ain’t dumb, realizing that autographed cards just like other collectibles is all about disposable income that’s one of the first and last things to be affected by the economy.
Nevertheless it’s nice to see a 2001 card being offered and it’s a rookie and it’s for a player we are familiar with thanks to Peyton Manning. The Colts seem unstoppable so all of these factors help this card’s current value.
At a penny shy of $30, it’s nicely undervalued. You may be able to double your money if the card arrives in your mailbox if the Colts are in the Super Bowl or if they win the Super Bowl.
Looking at the sales of other autographed 2001 cards of Reggie Wayne, it looks like most of them are in the $60-$70 range except for the graded ones. They fetch a lot higher and you could probably score at least $100 if you wait it out and have BGS inspect the auto. The downside to any grading is the time it takes. Some have the patience for this while others do not.
For the collector, you couldn’t ask for a better Christmas present from etopps if you like Reggie Wayne or if you’re a Colts fan, a fan of the 2001 etopps Football set or just like etopps autographs. At $30, etopps deserves kudos for this price. They know there are potential buyers of this card who have already spent a lot of saved-up coin for holiday shopping.
What’s also nice is how Mr. Wayne signed the card. While others may have just scribbled their initials and jersey number, it’s easy to see he wrote his full name. What’s also nice is he signed his name in the top left corner without touching the foreground image of his head or his body in the background picture.
Overall it’s nice to see more autographs from etopps and nice to review them once again. For the collector, you couldn’t ask for a better opportunity and for the seller, patience is the key to make a better profit on this.
