2009 Tristar Sports Show in Houston

on December 29th, 2008 by houstoncollector

So the show is set for January 23-25, 2009.  I’m probably going to be going the 24th, as I work Sundays, and that’s going to be one of the prime days.  I was wanting to get some autographs, but then I saw the prices.  Holy hell.
I love the Astros, don’t get me wrong, and [...]

Another Note On Beckett

on December 23rd, 2008 by houstoncollector

I was informed that Chris Olds at Beckett had made a post which touches upon the current furor surrounding the blogosphere, and I thought I would discuss that here.  Also, I want to point out that I have responded to Chris’s comment via email, and have opened the door for any constructive discussion that Beckett [...]

Reviews, an Explanation (And 3000 Hits!)

on December 23rd, 2008 by houstoncollector

So, with the fact that I am now on Upper Deck’s press release list, I have decided starting in 2009 I am going to start doing reviews.  However, obviously, I’m not getting free product, so what I’m going to do (in a slight bending of my rules) is purchase between 1 and 3 packs of [...]

So Who is Truly To Blame?

on December 23rd, 2008 by houstoncollector

First, after Gellman at Sports Cards Uncensored threw up his video rant based on the recent Beckett Prime Cuts box break, I did my own video.  However, a lot has happened since then.  So here’s what I’m going to do.  First, here is my video response to his rant:

With that being said, many more things [...]

2006 Bowman Chrome Football Box Break

on December 23rd, 2008 by houstoncollector

In what is probably my last box break of 2008, I have a hobby box of 2006 Bowman Chrome Football.  Not a bad box, all things considered, and I got my money’s worth with a solid autograph, box loader and one good parallel.  See the video for more.  On a side note, I have decided [...]

What Are /YOUR/ Pulls Of A Lifetime?

on December 19th, 2008 by houstoncollector

So, let’s compare.  I started back collecting in 2006, and have probably spent well over $2,000 on cards in the past couple of years.  Note:  Most of this was done while working at /Wal-Mart/, although I still had disposable income.
1992 Score Joe Dimaggio AU - Pulled 2007.
2006 Topps Alex Gordon AU - Pulled 2006.
2007 Fleer [...]

It’s Just (Baseball) Cards

on December 19th, 2008 by houstoncollector

So, a certain unnamed company gets another hand-selected box of product for a box break from an unnamed manufacturer.  I really don’t want to give any more publicity to the asses behind this, but, as Gellman over on Sports Card Uncensored predicted, they had a HUGE pull.  Given that I just spent $70 on a [...]

Blog Bat-Around, Round 2: The Centerpiece of My Collection

on December 17th, 2008 by houstoncollector

I originally collected cards back in the mid-to-late 1980s, through about 1991, when I quit due to price.  I came back in 2006 with a vengeance, deciding that I only wanted to collect Houston Astros and Texans, and only long-term players.  So the collection has taken a few twists and turns through the years, such [...]

Update on the Base Giveaway

on December 12th, 2008 by houstoncollector

For everyone worried about their favorite team not being available? When I said I had approximately 12000-20000 base cards, I wasn’t lying. The only teams that should even /begin/ to worry right now about not having enough for at least 2-3 people to each get a box are the Rockies and the Rays, [...]

Another one bites the dust

on December 12th, 2008 by houstoncollector

The Astros have just announced that they will not be tendering contracts to Reggie Abercrombie and Ty Wigginton.
While Ty leaving the team only leaves the Astros without a solid 3rd baseman for next year, it means that Reggie Abercrombie is no longer on my collecting list either.  However, it does pretty much mean that the [...]

Rule 5 Draft / Collecting

on December 11th, 2008 by houstoncollector

Well, the Rule 5 draft happened today, and the Houston Astros made a number of changes, adding Gil de la Vara from the Royals, Lou Palimsano from the Brewers via a trade from the Orioles and Drew Locke from the Dodgers.
Unfortunately, they also lost Rafael Quintero and Jonny Ash.  I know I was collecting Jonny [...]

The Great (Baseball) Base Giveaway of 2008/2009.

on December 9th, 2008 by houstoncollector

I have too many base cards.  I have (approximately) four boxes, ranging between 3200 and 5000 cards each, of nothing but base, seperated by teams, from 1967 through 2008 (with most being 1991-1992 and 2006-2008).
Here’s what I’m going to do:  I’m going to get a lot of either bags or small boxes, and ship [...]

The Great Base Trade of 2008/2009

on November 24th, 2008 by houstoncollector

Repost from Sports Card Forum:
I want to get rid of my base, in exchange for the following players:
Brandon Backe
Craig Biggio
Fernando Nieve
Humberto Quintero
Hunter Pence
Jeff Bagwell
Lance Berkman
Michael Bourn
Mike Scott
Nolan Ryan
Reggie Abercrombie
Roy Oswalt
Wandy Rodriguez
I only want base, no rookies, no #’d, no parallels, no inserts, as that’s all I’m offering at this time.
Let me know what teams you [...]

Veteran’s Day

on November 11th, 2008 by houstoncollector

I am a veteran.  Well, technically, at least.  I was nineteen years old and it was late 1991.  I was in a bad personal situation, and was basically told by a family member (who I was staying with) that I either needed to join the military, or find somewhere else to stay.  So, after losing [...]

2007 FLeer Ultra SE Video Box Break

on November 10th, 2008 by houstoncollector

Another bust that I did recently was this one of 2007 Fleer Ultra SE. I didn’t do too badly, I feel, although I got nailed pretty damn hard on the shipping.
Seriously. $8 for shipping something that you slapped cardboard around, taped it, called it good, and were charged less than $4 for? [...]

1997 Topps Chrome Baseball Break

on November 9th, 2008 by houstoncollector

At the San Antonio show, I picked up a box of 1997 Topps Chrome, before I realized that Lance Berkman is /not/ in this set.  So, I busted it anyway, on video, and here it is.

2008 Topps Chrome Football Blaster Break

on November 8th, 2008 by houstoncollector

Did another 2008 Topps Chrome break last night, and while it wasn’t as good as the first break, it still wasn’t bad.
This time, I was able to keep it under 10 minutes, so it’s up on Youtube.  Enjoy!

2000!

I have broken 2,000 hits.  Woohoo!  Granted, I couldn’t have done it without help from Wax Heaven, Sportscards Uncensored, and the other blogs that have linked to me, so thanks go out to all of these guys.

One thing I’ve noticed though, is that I get views, but no comments.  Is there something you guys would [...]
