The last few days have been incredibly busy for me. Unfortunately, the quality of posts on my blog (which, let's be honest were never that high to begin with) has been quite poor. While it may seem like a poor idea to use a trade post as a "pick me up" for blog writing - that's exactly what I am to do. The particular package is from Night Owl - a person who never seems to lack for quality posts (or great cards to send me). The great thing about our relationship is my knack for pulling Dodgers seems to be equaled only by his knack for pulling cards that reside on my want list!

While the venerable Night Owl did send me a bunch of Reds plus a Ginter relic (that I'll get to later in the post), in many ways, the real highlight of the package was three surprise cards: Kosuke Fukudome, Pedro Martinez, and Clayton Kershaw. Yes, you read that right - the highlight wasn't relic, nor Reds cards - but a Cub, Met, and Dodger (oh my!).

You see, I needed the three aforementioned cards as part of my quest to complete the 2008 Upper Deck Timeline set. You may recall that's the set with 50 base cards and then 300 short prints (I kid you not). And yes, I'm dumb enough to try and collect the thing. Companies like Topps and Upper Deck rely on shmucks like me - it's probably good for them to see that I'm not letting them down.

Now that I have the three Timeline cards, I am down to only needing 19 more cards to complete the set. In case you don't feel like clicking over to my want list, here's what I still need:

Base: #235, 276, 279, 288, 300, 302, 308, 332, 334, 336, 341, 345, 356, 361, 363, 366, 373, 374, 375
As you can see, I'm tantalizingly close to completing the bad boy. I should mention that I have a ton of cards from the set still available for trade - and I'll gladly trade two-for-one, three-for-one, or ten-for-one if I have to. My newest goal is to complete this set before Ginter comes out this summer. I'd love to finally cross of a full set from the want list - and this one seems to be as good as any to try to meet my goal. Perhaps some of you had decided to try and complete the set and have since given up - or maybe you are still working on it and can possibly trade me one (or more) of the cards I need in exchange for two (or more) cards that you still need...it'd be a win-win for all of us!

Besides the UD Timeline cards, Night Owl also sent me my first Golden Sparkle card from 2012.

That's right - I didn't buy a single pack of 2012 Topps, nor Opening Day, nor Heritage. I think I'm still annoyed that I can't finish off a bunch of sets from the past few years which is sort of pushing me in the direction of not trying to start a bunch of new sets! In addition, money has been extra tight lately - so frivolous spending on cards is an easy way to save a buck or two. Luckily for me, the group breaks that I've hosted still help me satisfy my pack opening itch, even if I don't get to keep most of the cards.

The Golden Sparkle wasn't the only 2012 card in the package, there was also this 1987 mini of Joey Votto.

I certainly hope Votto remains a Red for many years to come - but recent signs (and statements) seem to put the odds at 50-50 (at best). I suppose I should be sure to enjoy Votto's cards while he remains a Red and be happy that such a good player played for Cincinnati. It's been quite awhile since the Reds have had a true superstar - the last probably being Ken Griffey Jr. and we all know how that worked out.

There were a few other assorted Reds - including a true 1975 mini and a rather ugly Calvin "Pokey" Reese card. However, as team collectors know - even an ugly card, if it is a new one for the collection, is much appreciated!

And finally, the reason the trade started in the first place:

That's the 65th different relic card that I now own from the 2011 Topps Allen & Ginter set. Unfortunately, by my count, there are almost 200 different relics in the set - 198 if my list is correct. I'm debating about trying to sell my entire collection of both 2011 and 2010 relics (and autos) in an attempt to raise enough funds to put serious charge into the 2012 Topps Allen & Ginter relic set. It's hard to part with the relics though...so I guess we'll see. Maybe in a moment of weakness you'll see them on eBay.

Thanks for all the great cards Night Owl! And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade - check out my want list and make an offer!

2012 Topps #100 Jose Bautista
As an adult I now realize Hero is a term that is more appropriate when applied to my local EMT making snap decisions under difficult circumstances then a Millionaire Ballplayer throwing and hitting a little white ball. In that way I suppose we should use the term Glamor Number, but Hero Number is what I grew up with and I am sticking to it.

This line of thinking let me down a strange path ...Lets look at this years Heroes.

100 Jose Bautista
200 Miguel Cabrera
300 Josh Hamilton

I quickly noted that the latter 2 in the group have had various issues with alcohol and substance abuse.

Should Hamilton and Cabrera get Hero Numbers?

I wanted to find out how much this is noted by fans of the players.

Regarding Miguel Cabrera
Too Many Verlanders:
When he got in trouble again for drinking and driving, I definitely got very frustrated, as I get every time some knuckleheaded gazillionaire athlete, who could easily afford 10 different limo drivers every night, pulls that crap. He's more frustrating than most for me because he plays for a team I root for, and more importantly he obviously has so much more talent than almost every Major Leaguer that I would hate to see him throw that away.

Then TVL went on to add an interesting comment
....while what Cabrera did (multiple times) was very reprehensible, and probably should have resulted in more severe punishment either by the local authorities, MLB or both, I find people criticizing Cabrera and fawning over Josh Hamilton frustratingly hypocritical.

When I asked the questions Too Many Verlanders was unaware that one of the other Hero Number Mates was Hamiton.

Regarding Hamilton
Play at the Plate

We would all hope the people our kids look up to would be solid citizens who don’t make mistakes. In reality, many athletes aren’t good role models. It could be for any variety of on or off field behavior, but it’s true nonetheless. The thing I like about Josh Hamilton is that he stood up and faced the media, and thus his fans, when he could have just tried to ignore or cover up his recent relapse. All of us make mistakes, but most of us don’t face the scrutiny someone like Hamilton faces.

interesting comments all. And I am glad I asked the question.

Granted at the time of publication Topps didn't know that Hamilton would tarnish his refurbished image. Regardless It's obvious that Topps didn't really note off the field activities when awarding the numbers.

And I ask Why Not?

Would you consider it a gimmick if Topps awarded the Hero Numbers to star players who are also solid citizens???

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
Greg (from Night Owl Cards) and I recently completed our gabillionth* trade. This time, I sent Greg 25 base cards from 2011 Lineage (or as he calls them, packing peanuts). In return, I was able land about a dozen cards from my own want lists!

*approximately

What amazed me the most about this trade is that no matter how many times I trade with Greg, he always manages to knock a substantial chunk of cards off my want list. It's almost like he is manufacturing cards specifically for my want list in an effort to keep wooing Dodgers (and packing peanuts) away from me. Whatever he's doing, I hope it continues because there's not much better than getting to knock cards off the 'ol want list.

We'll start with the only card that Greg sent me that wasn't on my want list...but it's probably the coolest of all the cards - 2011 Topps Diamond Platinum Cognac Blue Tint Sparkly Exclusive* card of Fred Lewis (#ed 57/60)

*real name for the parallel unknown since I never pull anything this rare, but I'm guessing that it some of the above words in it somewhere so I'm close enough.

Next, a pair of regular 'ol diamond parallels. I'm still working my way towards completing the set so every bit helps!

Greg also sent me a pair of Topps Lineage cards.

First, a Hunter Pence stand-up card (which means I'm now only missing the A-Rod stand-up and the Hank Aaron stand-up). The other Lineage card was a platinum parallel of Joey Votto. I decided against trying to complete any of the parallel sets in their entirety, instead I am focusing only on the Reds in the three parallel sets (diamond, platinum, and 1975 minis).

The above cards were all appreciated, but not entirely surprising (other than the Lewis card) because they are relatively new. Greg blew the trade package out of the proverbial water with his inclusion of seven different 2008 UD Timelines cards that I needed.

Given that group of cards, I'm oh-so-close to having the Timelines set complete. I'm only missing the following 22 cards:

Base: 232, 235, 274, 276, 279, 288, 300, 302, 304, 308, 332, 334, 336, 341, 345, 356, 361, 363, 366, 373, 374, 375
Not bad considering there are something like 250 short prints in that set!

Thanks a lot for yet another trade Greg! And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade, check out my want list and make an offer!

Greg (from the always wonderful Night Owl Cards) and I recently completed our second trade in the last couple of weeks...each time I ended up with some cards from my want list and Greg ended up with another pile of 1975 minis from the 2011 Topps Lineage set.

Here's my most recent haul from Greg:

2010 Topps National Chicle:
304. Ryan Howard
307. Brent Dlugach

If I didn't know better, I would have said that the Dlugach card was one of Topps' infamous gimmicks. However, under the assumption that there actually exists a player named Brent Dlugach, I feel bad for the guy...the back of his card mentions Cal Ripken Jr, Derek Jeter, A-rod, and Troy Tulowitzki...there's not much of a chance that Dlugach lives up to any of the above guys, and that's too bad.

1991 Score:
634. Tony Fossas

What's that you say? I traded away Lineage minis (which seem to be almost equivalent to gold these days) in exchange for a 1991 Score card?! Answer: You betcha*.

*apologies to Sarah for stealing her phrase...or at least her only phrase that makes sense. I'd like to say that I see Russia from my house, but alas, I don't.

2008 Topps Stadium Club:
110b. David Purcey
127b. Blake DeWitt

Of all the cards in this particular trade package, these were by far the best two. You see, I now only need four more cards from the 2008 Topps Stadium Club set (namely: 15, 78, 108b, 117b ). My hopes have been renewed that I might actually be able to finish this set off sometime soon...

2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces:

Greg really mined his collection looking for cards to send me - a few 2010s, a couple 2008s, a 1991 card, and now another '08...and soon a 2011 card. Trades like that are fun for me - lots of cards off the want list, and a bunch of sets that I feel like I'm "making progress" on. And, after this Jeter is put into the binder, I don't have to look at the pair of Yankees celebrating again...or at least not in any way except as part of a binder page (in which the other cards will hopefully overshadow Mr. Jeter.

And finally, one more card - this one happened to be the only representative from 2011:

Gypsy Queen:
97. Stan Musial

I have no idea if I'll ever finish the Gypsy Queen set, but until I think it's impossible, I'll keep it on my want list. At least I'm over 50% complete, that's something...

Thanks for the trade Greg! And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade, check out my want list and make an offer!

Greg sends me some Reds.

I send Greg some Dodgers.

And so it goes.

2011 Topps Diamond parallel:
163. Carlos Pena

I get to cross off one more card from the 2011 Diamond parallel want list - I'm slowly approaching the end of the journey.

2011 Topps gold parallel:
317. Yonder Alonso

Alonso's place in the big leagues is blocked by some guy named Votto. Yeah, looks like Yonder won't be making the Reds big club anytime soon...

And some shiny:

Greg (from Night Owl Cards) and I have exchanged 27 trade packages (by my count) dating back to mid-2009. The latest mailing went to me from Greg – and it contained a bunch of cards that I needed from my 2011 Topps set, plus a couple of new Larkins for my collection, and a few other goodies – let’s take a look!

2011 Topps:
Topps 60:
T60-5. Lou Gehrig
T60-42. Mat Latos

Did you know that Mat Latos was in the top 10 WHIP for 2010? Me either. As a Reds fan, I was also a little bit surprised to see Bronson Arroyo in the top 10. Oswalt and Halladay were one-two, and while I would have thought Halladay would have been one, I’m sure any Phillies fan won’t mind which order the two Roys appear in a top 10 list!

History of Topps:
HOT-5. Topps Goes Public

HOT-8. Topps Moves from Booklyn to NYC

These are last two cards that I needed from the History of Topps insert set. Somehow, I had a feeling that this would be the easiest set to complete (it was small – only 10 cards but more importantly, most people seemed uninterested in the set)! As for me, I’m simply thankful that I get to knock another set off my want list entirely!

Topps Town:
TT-5. Roy Halladay

I know no one wants to see scans of Topps Town anymore, but you know what – when someone sends me the last card I need from the set, not only are you going to see the scan, you’re going to like it. And yes, if you are keeping track at home, that means that Greg managed to finish off two of my sets for me – no wonder why we trade so many times over the years!

Diamond parallels:
164. Koji Uehara
276. Miguel Olivo

It’s been awhile since I received some diamond parallels – these two will net Greg a pair of entries into my contest – and they helped me hit the 60% completion threshold! Also, the two cards aren’t terribly miscut, I simply scanned them poorly and didn’t bother redoing the scan.

Finally, Greg also threw in a couple of Barry Larkins and some assorted Reds cards. The Larkins will get their own chance to shine at some point in my ongoing Barry Larkin Collection series.

Thanks a lot for all the great cards! And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade – check out my want list and make an offer!

There are many great bloggers out there and there are many great traders out there. However, there are only a few who manage to be prolific in both aspects - Greg from Night Owl Cards is one such person. Last year, I completed a total of 122 trades - 10 of which were with Greg! The last package I sent him was a bunch of Dodgers out of the blue. Not to be out done, here's what he sent me a month and half later:

Since I began keeping track, Greg and I have completed 17 trades, sometimes prearranged, other times just sending stuff because we both seem to be better at pulling "the other guy's team" rather than our own from packs. For each package I've sent Greg, I think he's managed to produce an epic post full of scans. It's only fair that I do the same.

Let's take a look:

First up, a whole bunch of "Tom Terrific" cards from 1992 Pacific. I really enjoyed Pacific's late 90s and early 00s stuff (you know, once they went die-cut crazy and all) but their earlier stuff was mostly drab...and so I avoided it. I don't know what set these cards actually came from, perhaps a Tom Terrific set?

At least the back of the card does say that they are authorized by Tom Seaver - I didn't know individual players had to authorize their cards (isn't that what the MLBPA logo is for now)? Maybe things were different wayyyy back in '92 (said tongue in cheek in case my sarcasm didn't show up in text form).

Much like the Seaver cards above, Greg managed to send me some cards from another set that I didn't own any representatives from - and a 2010 set to boot! In this case, it's 2010 Topps Updates & Highlights (or whatever they called it this year). I bought some of last year's Updates set and was completely underwhelmed so I avoided this year's rendition. Judging by these two Reds cards, I made the correct choice.

The Leake card is actually pretty nice - I especially enjoy the write up on the back of the card featuring information about his MLB debut. The second card is a better example of why I generally don't care for Updates & Highlights - it's so freaking boring! In this case, you have a card of two young stars, both exciting players in their own right and you slap them together on a card when they are frowning while playing catch. *yawn*.

From 2010, Greg's package jumped way back to 1975 with a Clay Carroll card.

The '75 set was before my time, which is too bad because I actually dig all the funky colors. Maybe when I become independently wealthy I'll pursue the set in its entirety. Until that point, I'll try to stay satisfied with the morsels that others throw (or preferably mail) my way.

As if two sets weren't enough, Greg managed to find a third set that I never bought cards from - the 1998 Bowman set (not to be confused with every single other freaking Bowman set since then).

Obviously, my disdain for the Bowman line has been documented before - but I'll still gladly accept any and all Reds! I like the team-by-team statistical breakdown on the back of the card, but the base design of Bowman bores me to tears. Any one set design like the card above would be fine, but to me, ALL Bowman sets from the past decade plus look identical...and that's not a good thing (unlike with Allen & Ginter which I'll be mad if they deviate too far from their formula)!

Collectors sure are fickle, huh?

Moving along.

Next up, a card from a set line that I really enjoyed - Goudey.

This particular card is a green back mini card from the 2007 UD Goudey set. I haven't decided whether or not I'll chase the '07 set (especially since I have yet to finish the '08 and '09 sets) but I'll happily take any mini cards from the set! Perhaps I'll work on a hybrid red/green mini set - that'd be kind of cool, and Christmas-y.

From one retro themed set to another - 2010 Topps Turkey Red, #58 Joey Votto.

Votto is a beast so acquiring his cards is always fun for me. I am a bit worried he's a bit of a head-case though...and there have been rumblings of him returning to his native Canada and playing for the Blue Jays in a few years. Hopefully he makes the right decision and stays in Cincinnati!

At this point, it's time for the three "best" cards in the trade package:

First up, a gold parallel 2010 Updates and Highlights card of Chris Heisey.

I'm fairly high on Heisey's chances of becoming a great major leaguer, but it does appear that the Reds brass isn't...especially since they are supposedly talking to Podsednik and Renteria's agents about a 2011 contract. As for the card itself, when did Topps decide to stop using gold foil for the serially numbering? I hope that's only in effect for the 2010 U&H set...the blank print just looks cheap! Still, I am now the proud owner of a card that at most 2009 other people also own.

I may have gone a bit overboard on 2010 Allen & Ginter, but I probably ended up spending close to what I spent in 2009 thanks to the lack of variety and compelling sets out there. As such, I haven't bought anything new since Allen & Ginter - and that includes Topps Chrome in all of its curvy goodness!

This Drew Stubbs card is pretty sharp, Stubbs almost has a 3D effect going on there - I actually enjoy the Topps Chrome line but I'm usually too burnt out of the base set design to bother spending three bucks for a pack of four curved cards. It doesn't help that I usually pull nothing but crap when I buy Chrome too.

And finally, the big hit of the package! A purple refractor of Brandon Phillips #014/599.

See what I mean, Night Owl pulls Reds like you wouldn't believe...good thing I keep pulling Dodgers so he always has someone to send the cool cards to!

Thanks a lot Greg! I hope this eleven scan montrosity of a trade post was worthy of your genorsity! And, as always, if anyone else would like to trade - check out my want list and make an offer!
