There are few bloggers out there that I've traded with more often than Greg - we've exchanged at least 19 packages over the last couple of years (and perhaps more but I didn't keep track of trades in the beginning of my blog's existence). Even with all those trades, we still manage to find cards that the other person wants - and many times we are able to successfully "surprise" the other person with a package of Dodger or Red goodness.

Well, the latest package in my mailbox wasn't exactly a surprise - in fact, it was Greg's claim on one of my Topps Chrome Blue Refractors of some random Dodger (I jest, I jest). Greg managed to pry that Dodger out of my hand by offering me something I can never refuse - cards off my want list!

Phungo 5 with Night Owl Cards

The Phils are in the middle of a 7 game West Coast swing which find them in LA to visit the Dodgers this week. Dodgers means checking in with Greg from Night Owl Cards.

1) What current Dodger player is the most overlooked by Topps?

It'd have to be Vicente Padilla. He isn't on a Topps or Heritage card this year. Just about all the other Dodgers are covered.

2) Explain the Octavio Dotel move to me.

I don't think I can. Even if I could explain it in the most logical way possible, you would say it wouldn't make sense. The Dodgers traded two prospects that they once thought quite highly of -- James McDonald and Andrew Lambo -- for a set-up reliever. This is a move you make when you're one game out of the lead, not 8 out with three teams ahead of you. Even then I don't think you make the move. How has Dotel helped the Dodgers? Their bullpen is even more of a disaster. McDonald had issues but I was willing to work through them, he's young. Losing Lambo hurts. He's already hitting well in the Pittsburgh organization.

3) What is the Most annoying non-Sports Sports story 2010?

Far and away Brett Favre. The story won't die. Unlike the others, it reappears every year. And it produces more stories about absolutely nothing than the other candidates combined. It has wasted hours at work since I'm forced to read these stories. I don't even like that I'm writing about him right now. If there are any aliens out there reading this, I am pleading with you to land in Hattiesburg, Miss., and take Brett Favre away so you can perform whatever examinations you must to figure out why this guy is like this. But please don't return him to us.

4)Am I correct in noting that there are no actual Night cards in the Night Owl banner??

Yup, no night cards. When I designed the banner, I just grabbed some cards I knew I liked. There wasn't any other thought that went into it. I'd change it, but it's too much of a process.

5) I love this one - and Night Owl will probably be sorry he ever turned me on to the concept, Give me 3 candidates for Blobs in the Dodgers Phils series.
Even though the Phillies will probably sweep, I can't predict a sweep.

NOC and I first swapped emails for this interview maybe two weeks ago when things weren't going well for the Dodgers. I think in there they had a mini-surge - More recently they have sunk back to the middle of the pack and cast off Manny Ramirez. It is looking like their chances to get back into the WildCard hunt are diminishing.

Also related today's Manny Trade news, I would like to link to a posting I did on Ramirez in May of 2009. My attitudes towards Manny and steroids remain similar. Any time I got to see him play he had the potential to do something exciting - and that's part of why I go to the yard.

So many of the bloggers blow me away not only with their frequency of posts, but also with so many ideas that are both interesting and funny. The Bowman's Best Utley card is real nice. On top of being nice and shiny the card has some real weight and sturdiness. Any card of the Tugger Rocks - I like the artwork on the front of the checklist - Finally just wanted to post JA Happ and mention that the fan favorite is returning to Philadelphia this week after being traded last month in the deal for Roy Oswalt.

A sad note, Tommy Greene's young wife just passed away after battling cancer I think. He was in town for the Alumni weekend a few weeks back. I was always a fan of his and hope that he is able to deal with this real life loss.

If you take a close look you may notice a Non-Phils card in there. At some point I hope to put up a posting regarding this card that should be a significant help in completing a special Phungo Set.

Delivery Time! Surprise Cards from Greg over at Night Owl Cards

While on vacation, I received a number of yellow envelopes full of cards. Amongst those were a number of trades that I had completed right before I left, along with a surprise envelope. While there are many generous bloggers out there, Greg from the wonderful Night Owl Cards blog, is certainly one of the most generous! I'll get to the agreed upon trades in upcoming posts, but Greg deserves to "go first" given the great cards he sent me. Let's dig in.

It bugs me somewhat that batting averages and slugger percentages are spelled out as whole numbers rather than as decimals on the back of the Allen & Ginter cards. I'm probably the only person who is bugged by that.

They might not be relics that would help Night Owl win Gint-a-Cuffs, but they are two relics that I didn't previously own - and I'm trying to acquire 'em all!

In addition to the aforementioned goodies, Greg also sent me a couple of Barry Larkin cards and a nice stack of Reds cards, including another picture of Jose Rijo with a goofy prop. That guy must have had a thing for having props for all his card pictures!

It's time to sort through a few more remaining yellow envelopes that I haven't yet posted. In an effort to condense posts in order to get the group break packs all posted, I'm going to combine a bunch of envelopes into one large Delivery Time! trade post.

Here we go!

First up, some a contest prize from Mike over at Offy's Sports Site.
2009 Tristar - Obak
Gary Redus - Autograph #008/200

This is the first Obak card that I own, and I have to say I like it a lot. The autograph is a sticker which is a bit of a bummer, but Mr. Redus has a really nice autograph so that makes it worthwhile! Thanks for the prize Mike!

Second up, a bunch of Barry Larkin cards from Matt over at Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius. Matt asked for a 2009 Topps Heritage Chrome Refractor of Cliff Lee in exchange for a 2002 Upper Deck Plus serially-numbered card of Barry Larkin.

However, as is usually the case when I trade, I threw in a few extra Mariners and Royals for him and he threw in a few extra Barry Larkins for me!

As usual, all the Larkin cards will get their chance to shine in my ongoing Barry Larkin Collection series.

Third up, a package of cards from Greg over at Night Owl Cards. He went to a card show and offered to "shop*" for a lucky blog reader or two. I didn't come in first, but I did end up second - which was good enough for a nice pile of Reds cards, many of which I didn't previously own.

*Quick aside: I've often thought how great it would be for there to be some type of service where people would shop for you for some item that you hate shopping for. Maybe expert car buyers could buy cars on behalf of people who hate auto dealers or perhaps someone could open a grocery shopping business where they buy a weeks worth of food for a person who hates stepping foot in the supermarker. For me, I'd hire someone to buy my clothes as I hate shopping for clothes (and shoes for that matter). In fact, since I am a college instructor, I've often toyed with the idea of giving a few of my students a couple hundred bucks, my sizes, and telling them to come back with a new wardrobe for me. Of course, I haven't been brave enough to actually follow through on that plan but maybe someday. If nothing else it'd make an interesting blog entry about something other than baseball cards I'm sure!

The Owl over @ Night Owl Cards sent me a sweet package the other day with a bunch of MannyWood’s i needed plus some fish….. And that great card you see in the middle its a Co-signers of Scott Olsen and Josh Johnson….. Funny thing is i had traded for this card a long time ago with the Capt. but don’t worry, it will find a happy home….. thanks Owl and you should have gotten a package for me this week, right??

Kent is one of my all-time favorites and doing some spring cleaning of the collection I came upon these that I don't think I've highlighted before.

Kent will probably never make the Hall of Fame but if you ask me having a 2.85 ERA over 1,436.2 innings pitched should get you some serious consideration.

Random Night Owl Awesomeness

A little while ago, I responded to a Night Owl post, expressing interest in a certain Mickey Mantle X-Fractor he had. I don’t do a whole lot of trading, but once in a while, Greg and I usually end up making a pretty hefty Dodgers/Yankees exchange. With that said, I had yet to put together a Dodger package together for the Mantle (and what was sure to be a whole lot of other goodies) so it came as a quite a surprise when I found a package in my PO Box with his return address yesterday.

Greg had sent me nearly 90 cards, many of which were Yankee Team Set cards from 2009 and 2010 Topps. There were also cards from Topps Heritage, OPC, Topps Chrome, Opening Day, and Stadium Club. The package also contained a number of Mickey Mantle inserts that I know none of you are sick of seeing (*cough*) so I tried to limit the Mantles in this scan:

The Wang and Pettitte are Topps Chrome refractors if you couldn’t tell by the scan. It’s also a rarity when I am sent a card I’m not familiar with, but that was exactly the case with the New York, New York insert of Hideki Matsui (I also received a Wang NYNY insert). That’s what I get for not touching that OPC set I suppose. Anyway, thanks a lot Greg for another deal! Your package will be sent out early next week, when I’ll hopefully find time to actually write up a box review.

Delivery Time! Cards from Greg at Night Owl Cards

I've been busy busting packs and scanning cards - seemingly every minute I'm not at work - but that doesn't mean the group break is all work and no play. Au contraire my friend.

The latest envelope arrives courtesy of Greg over at the excellent Night Owl Cards blog. As of this writing, Greg's rapidly approaching 100,000 hits and promises to have a contest - so check out his blog. Chances are, by the time you read this Greg will be over the 100,000 plateau since I'm writing this a couple of days before it will be schedule to post.

Greg sent me a bunch of cards as part of a "payment" for the Dodgers even though he missed the signup. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were previously claimed by BABenny. However, Greg is in luck since I busted a full box of each of the sets myself so I've got plenty of my own cards to send his way. (Keep an eye on the mailbox Greg, they should be there early next week.)

And finally, a whole mess 'o Reds from a variety of years and sets. I love getting random Reds from people - it's amazing how many new cards I get each time!
