A week or two ago I found myself in a situation that may be familiar to some of you. We were having some friends over for a party and I had quite a few stacks of cards laying around the house that needed to disappear. I try to keep my collection contained within my office/card room but somehow these little pieces of cardboard end up migrating around from time to time. Anyway, I was pressed for time and quite a few miscellaneous stacks ended up getting put in a small paper shopping bag in my office during the cleanup effort.

Some of these cards were recent purchases, some older stacks of cards that I haven't looked through in forever. There are cards from the local hobby shop, trades, group breaks, retail purchases, eBay purchases...you name it. Honestly I don't even know what made it into the bag for the most part. Now that things have quieted down a bit, and I've got a vacation from work looming on the horizon, I am going to start getting through these cards, cataloging and organizing them. There are probably 150-200 cards in the bag, far too many for one post, but I came up with an easy way to show some of them here.

As a kid, one of my favorite parts of a trip to the hobby shop was the grab bag. You know, the brown cardboard bag taped shut and sold for just $1 or $2, filled with a few dozen cards that "could be anything!", but usually ended up being a bunch of '80s commons or some junk wax packs. I don't recall ever pulling anything fantastic from one, but I guess I was a sucker for the intrigue of not knowing what awaited me inside. Since I enjoyed these surprise packages so much, I figured the grab bag approach would be a good way to post some of these cards from my cleanup. For each post I'll just grab a small handful of cards from the bag and throw them up here on the blog. Here are 5 random choices to start things off...

First up is a 1994-95 Topps Finest refractor of Wade Redden. A few years ago I picked up a single wax box of '94-95 Finest hockey. I certainly could have done a little better with my refractor. Wade did enjoy a decent career, but there are just so many better names on the checklist for this set. I don't recall whether or not this was the only refractor I pulled in my box.

Like the early Topps Finest baseball refractors, there is no marking on the back of these to actually confirm that this is a refractor parallel, but it's very easy to tell in the right light.

Here's another Finest refractor, Chris Terreri from the '95-96 set. I picked up a '95-96 Finest wax box right around the same time as my '94-95 box. I ended up liking the '95-96 set a bit more, although they did this annoying thing with the checklist where they broke it down into bronze, silver and gold cards, with gold falling at just one per box. End result is a set that's very tough to complete. Chris here is a bronze refractor...

The refractors were also clearly labeled on the card backs in the '95-96 set, right above the card number. You can get a sense of what I'm referring to with the complicated checklist on the back here too. Is there a need for a "theme" number to go along with card number? I don't think so. Here's another refractor from that same box...

This is my personal favorite refractor out of what I landed in the two boxes. Really nice looking card and Potvin was one of those players I was happy to pull back in the day.

For some reason, even though Potvin's card is identical to Terreri's, both are bronze refractors with the "Defenders" theme, his "theme" is listed as D32, whereas Terreri's was D25. What does this mean? I have no idea. I guess I didn't read the wrapper closely enough.

Now for a couple of baseball cards. The two that I grabbed both happened to be relic cards of Will Clark.

This one's from the 2005 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic set. I am pretty sure this was an eBay win from literally years ago. Not a bad card but not particularly exciting. I probably only bid because it was dirt cheap.

The back of the card clearly states that this is a piece of jersey worn by Will in an actual MLB game. I hate to nit-pick, but it specifies that it was worn during his time with the Giants, yet Will is depicted with the Rangers on the card. Oh well.

Finally, we have another relic card of Clark, this time featured with the Giants, from the 2005 SP Authentic set. I think this one looks nicer, and it's serial numbered to 199.

This card, unlike the one above, actually gets it right in that Clark's depicted with San Francisco and the jersey swatch was used in a Giants game as well.

So there you go, 5 random cards from the bag in my closet. Do any of you gravitate towards the grab bag? I guess maybe retail repack packs are pretty much the same thing nowadays...

One of the very first projects I began when I started this blog back in January of 2008 was to collect the 1953 Topps baseball set. By the end of that first year, I had posted 33 cards from the set including my 3 best cards...

After that fast start though, things definitely died down. I posted just 4 of these in 2009, another 5 in 2010, and then none since. I've still picked up a card or two towards the set from time to time, but the posts stopped 42 cards in, back in the summer of 2010.

Now that my pursuit of the '80s Topps hockey run is nearing the end, I've turned my focus back to working away at this classic baseball set. I've picked up a handful of '53s over the last couple of months alone, including a couple of key cards, so it's high time I got back into the swing of things here.

Today's card is #20 in the set, Henry Thompson of the New York Giants.

Hank played his first professional season in 1943 at age 17, for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League. In 1944 he was drafted into the Army, and fought for a couple of years in World War II as a machine gunner. He returned to the Monarchs after being discharged from the military in the summer of 1946.

Hank's first big league experience would come in 1947, the same year that Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and appeared with the Brooklyn Dodgers to begin the season. On July 17th, 1947, just a couple of months after Jackie's first game, Hank took the field for the St. Louis Browns. He was the first African American to play for the Browns organization, and was one of the first African Americans to appear in an MLB game period. Unfortunately, his numbers were not that great, and after hitting just .256 with 5 RBI over 27 games he was cut by the team. Thompson returned to the Monarchs, but not for long.

On July 4th, 1949 Hank was called up to the New York Giants. A few days later, on July 8th, he and Monte Irvin debuted for the club, and together they became the first African American players to appear for the Giants. Since he had played with the Browns a couple of years prior, Thompson actually became the first African American to play in both the American and National Leagues. He would go on to appear in over 900 career games over the span of 8 seasons with New York.

This particular card is especially cool, because 1953 was arguably the best single season of Hank's career. He hit .302 (the only time he would top the .300 mark in a season), belted 24 home runs and 74 RBI, and recorded an impressive .567 slugging percentage that year.

Sadly, Thompson did not live a long life after his baseball days were behind him. He was convicted of armed robbery in the early '60s and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was paroled after just four years, but died in September of 1969 after suffering a seizure. He was just 43 years old.

Set Progress: 43 of 274 (16%)

I can't believe it's been nearly two weeks since my last post. Things have been a little hectic around here lately, but despite the lack of posting I've still been reading all of the other great sports card blogs out there, and have picked up plenty of new cardboard recently as well. I'll try to get back into the swing of things here with another selection for The Ultimate Hockey Card Set. Today we'll choose card #53 for the franken-set. First, let's take a look at a few card #53s from my collection that did not make the cut...

I've mentioned quite a few times before that I have a soft spot for '89-90 Topps/O-Pee-Chee. It was the very first set that I collected as a kid, in fact I still have my original white 3-ring binder with all the cards sorted out by team. Unfortunately for Guy here, there were just too many better #53s in my monster boxes. Besides, I just selected the Sakic rookie from '89-90 Topps in my last Ultimate Hockey Card Set post.

Card #53 in the inaugural Upper Deck flagship set belongs to Dale Hawerchuk. This card got some consideration for a number of reasons. First of all, I definitely want to include a '90-91 Upper Deck card at some point because it was a pretty ground-breaking set at the time. Secondly, I would like to cover as many teams as possible in the set and I haven't yet chosen a Winnipeg Jet. Finally, Dale Hawerchuk is a Hall-of-Famer and is probably worthy of inclusion in the set as well. Despite all of these facts though, this card just comes up short.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OXTUNPxSj6I/T65d9YOfi4I/AAAAAAAAOGM/I3g_iQ1MBS4/s1600/1981Topps053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Man those old WHA logos are great.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4cM5s4Wqfa4/T65dqyo2IEI/AAAAAAAAOF8/VGQ3IeS7DcI/s1600/2008UpperDeckMasterpieces53.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Guy is certainly worthy of inclusion, but I'm confident I can find a better Lafleur card than this in my collection.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s7ZxBJVg5_s/T65dSqfxGeI/AAAAAAAAOF0/9vXQeKPlFww/s1600/2001ToppsChrome053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I'm a big Fedorov guy but today is not his day...

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ce0sXjrP-Hk/T65c3Ka_n9I/AAAAAAAAOFs/XcfjqMOCe20/s1600/2010UpperDeckTheCup053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Capturing the bronze is this Ron Francis base card from Upper Deck The Cup. Certainly one of my thickest cards, but not as nice as the two cards that beat it out. Besides, I already selected Francis' O-Pee-Chee rookie for this set.

The runner-up is Wayne Gretzky's base card from the 1987-88 Topps set. I've got the O-Pee-Chee version as well, and it's certainly a nice looking card. I'm sure at least one or two more Gretzky's will be selected for this set eventually, but today Wayne has been beaten out by a card that's just plain better than this one. Here's your winner, card #53 in The Ultimate Hockey Card Set:

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tpRhu773lMc/T65cH1YgXhI/AAAAAAAAOFc/HbVJbThLk0I/s1600/1986Topps053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Patrick Roy's rookie is one of those cards that I've always coveted, even more so in the past couple of years since I decided to focus heavily on completing the run of Topps hockey sets from '79-80 through '89-90. When I had a little extra tax money in my pocket a few months ago, and found this one at a price I was satisfied with, I finally pulled the trigger.

Roy was one of the best (arguably the best) goalies to ever put on pads, and the rookie card of the Hall-of-Famer and Stanley Cup champion is one of the more instantly recognizable hockey cards out there. I can't think of another card #53 that could supplant this one, can you?

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JnI5l9b2Tuc/T65bKShgaNI/AAAAAAAAOFU/l0hmfL9uqSo/s1600/1986Topps053Back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Here's the final pack I'll be posting from the lot of 17 1978-79 Topps hockey packs I snagged at the hobby shop well over a year ago now. This one was by far the best of the lot. 12 cards and a sticker, here we go...

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; He never played a single NHL game with any other franchise, the Penguins included. Was this just an error? Anyone know?

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I guess this is one of the better stickers to pull given that the Habs won their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup this season.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; The hope of pulling a Bossy was one of my primary reasons for purchasing these packs. The shop owner was honest and admitted that one had already been pulled from the wax box before I purchased what was left, so the odds weren't great, and I was ecstatic to land this one. Best of all, this card is in absolute mint, grade-able condition. There was a pattern with nearly all of these packs where the cards in the top half, before the team sticker, were almost all badly off-center. The cards in the bottom half, after the team sticker, were really well centered and in much better shape. Luckily for me, the Bossy came in the latter half of this pack, and has four sharp corners and great centering and eye appeal.

Here's a look at the back. I really like Bossy's signature.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Vy8HUk7blg/T5tkXCdoCkI/AAAAAAAAOBw/tZsfurn8HvM/s1600/1978Topps035.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; That's a wrap. Sure, I could have picked up a complete '78-79 Topps set for probably less than what I paid for these packs, but pulling a mint Bossy rookie from a wax pack that's older than I am was one of the highlights of my collecting experience so far.

Here's a look at Mike in his new home, an Ultra Pro One Touch holder. Truly a classic card of one of the best pure goal scorers ever to lace up a pair of skates!

I can remember opening packs of 1987 and 1990 Topps baseball as a kid and getting excited when I landed a card from the All-Star subset. It meant that you had pulled a card of one of the game's best, that your pack was a success. So, when I got back into collecting a few years ago I decided to chase the 1958 Topps All-Star subset.

1958 was the inaugural year for the All-Star subset, with the final 21 cards of the flagship set (cards #475-495) devoted to Sport Magazine All-Stars. All in all, the set featured 10 AL players, 10 NL players, and a coaches card. The design, as you can see on the Eddie Matthews card above, is pretty basic but classic in my opinion. The color scheme of red (AL) and blue (NL) backgrounds is fitting, to me these are everything that great 1950s baseball cards should be.

I decided to try for this subset for a couple of reasons. First, the historical significance of the subset. After this first release in 1958, Topps would include All-Star subsets in its next 4 flagship sets, through 1962. There weren't any All-Star cards from 1963-1967, but then they came back in many (though not all) Topps sets after that. Secondly, this set seemed attainable. Just 21 cards on the checklist, and even the Hall-of-Famers can be had for a relatively good price compared to many of their other cards from the '50s.

Anyway, I've been working away at this one since 2007, sometimes focused on it, other times not picking up a card or even thinking about it for a year or more. Recently I landed the final card I needed though, #486 Willie Mays. Here are all 21...

The subset starts off with the All-Star Managers, featuring Casey Stengel and Fred Haney. Casey is the first of many Hall-of-Famers featured...

The first NL card is none other than Stan Musial. This card is significant because it's the first time that Musial ever appeared on a Topps card! Apparently he agreed to do so based on Topps' contribution to a charity.

Moose Skowron may not be in the Hall-of-Fame, but the long-time Yankee was an 8x All-Star and 5x World Series Champ.

Johnny was a solid second baseman and lead-off hitter. He never got the 75% of the vote needed from that group (came tantalizingly close at 74.7%), but the Veteran's Committee righted that wrong and elected him in 1997. All I have to say is that that is one of the highest-worn hats I've ever seen in my life.

As of now, Mathews is one of only 25 guys to club 500+ career home runs. I'm not sure what is going on with his eyebrows on this card though.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1wjG3F77xVk/T5lX_rh0wQI/AAAAAAAAOAg/cEedwSXNoic/s1600/1958Topps481.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I've always liked Banks and have found him to be a sympathetic figure. How can you not like a guy who played over 2,500 games, clubbed over 500 home runs, won back to back MVPs, yet never sniffed the post-season? I've been casually poking away at his run of Topps cards from his 1954 rookie through his final 1971 card for some time now. I'm only missing a handful now, but unfortunately one of those is the '54 rookie. This card in particular is cool because Banks was the NL MVP in 1958.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l2e8pCGgqBU/T5lX6Wj_yqI/AAAAAAAAOAQ/b2imPqpBpUQ/s1600/1958Topps483.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Luis was lightning fast, could hit, field well (9x Gold Glove winner) and steal bases. He was one of the premier shortstops of his era. The next 5 cards are really the meat and potatoes of this subset though...

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EDr1irGXO5M/T5lX1IFK5qI/AAAAAAAAOAA/usgKvsQMIcw/s1600/1958Topps485.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I really need to make it a point to add another to my collection.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zMvQOPvp3w4/T5lXynvtRWI/AAAAAAAAN_4/orbqp1CQTLo/s1600/1958Topps486.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; If you are looking for a vintage Mantle on the cheap, this is a good option. Even in a PSA 6 you can sometimes find these for under $100. If you're not strict on condition you can find them for under $50.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The last 5 guys are all Hall-of-Famers, all members of the 500+ Home Run club, and are 5 of the best outfielders to ever play Major League Baseball. I think Hank Aaron's card may be my favorite.

In addition to being elected an All-Star in 1958, Turley's 21 wins earned him the Cy Young Award (only a single award was given out for both leagues before 1966). Oh yeah, the Yankees also won the World Series, and Bullet Bob was elected World Series MVP. Not a bad season right there.

Spahn had an amazing season in 1958, and had separate Cy Young awards existed for each league then as they do now, he would have garnered some consideration for the NL award for sure.

The final card in the subset, and the final card in the 1958 Topps flagship set, is Herb Score. Score looked amazing when he broke into the league as a youngster in 1955. He struck out 245 in his rookie year, a record that stood until 1984. His second year was even more impressive, as Herb went 20-9 with a 2.53 ERA, and 16 complete games. He also threw more shutouts (5), and had more strikeouts (263), than anyone else in the league that year. Unfortunately, the following season he caught a brutal line drive to the face. He was never the same pitcher, and after suffering a couple of additional injuries his career came to an end with 4 appearances for the White Sox in 1962.

So there you have it, the very first Topps All-Star subset. There really is something for almost everyone within these 21 cards. It was fun putting this together and extremely rewarding to finally have it completed. Now that I'm done with these I think I'll shift my focus back to my 1953 Topps set for a bit...

The biggest card in this series by far is Malkin's Young Guns rookie. I'll spoil the suspense right now and let you know that I did not pull one. Here's what I got instead...

Dupe.

I pulled a Tim Thomas from my Series 1 pack the other day, and the Bruins lost. Maybe Patrice will bring some better luck, as the B's take on the Caps in Game 5 of their opening round series just a few hours from now.

Hey, maybe this wasn't such a dud of a box after all! Potential trade bait was one of the main reasons I picked this up, and this two-color swatch is now sitting in the small pile of cards that's slowly building up for 1967ers.

Okay, this pack has to be a good omen for the Bruins.

Each pack contains one Victory card, I pulled Brandon Prust. I have to say that this repack box is pretty much exactly what I expected, not too extreme. All in all though I can't complain for $10. I got around 85 new cards for my collection, pulled a Maple Leafs hit to send off in a trade, and got a healthy stack of dupes for the trade box. Not bad for $10, but at the same time I'm looking forward to getting back to some different posts.

I'm enjoying an evening of drinking beer and watching playoff hockey...what better time to post the fourth pack from the "Extreme Value" Target repack box.

Today's pack is definitely a step up in terms of quality. This 2006-07 Upper Deck Series 1 pack could potentially have a decent card inside. Sidney Crosby's second year card was in this series, as well as Young Gun rookies of guys like Anze Kopitar, Phil Kessel, Jordan Staal and Shea Weber. Would I pull any of these? Hell no.

I got David Leneveu, who's NHL career consists of around 20 appearances with the Coyotes and one single appearance with the Blue Jackets. Off to the trade box for these. Let's see another sampling from the 100 bonus cards...

Dupe. Cool card though.

Like the '90-91 Bowman Adam Burt in the last post, I actually needed this card for my set. Yes, I'm hand collating a set that you can probably buy for less than $5.

This was an interesting card I don't recall having seen before. I have a feeling I can possibly identify this moment on cardboard. This is a 1994-95 Upper Deck card, meaning the photo is most likely from the previous '93-94 season or older. You can see a Pittsburgh Penguins player near the left border of the card. Since the Kings and Pens play in opposite Conferences, they saw each other only two times in 1993-94. The first of these two meetings was November 6th, 1993 in Los Angeles. This was still in the era where home teams predominately wore white, so it does seem likely that this photo was taken in LA. Donnelly certainly looks like he just scored on this card, and he did indeed record a goal in that November 6th contest. I'd say this photo was taken just moments after. Donnelly did score twice at home against Pittsburgh back in 1991, his only other career goals against the Pens, but I really think it's more likely that this picture's from the 1993 game.

I actually needed this 1991-92 Upper Deck Kings checklist card for my set...

...as well as this Canadiens checklist.

Dupe.

Dupe.

Dupe.

Interesting card of one of the biggest draft busts ever. I did much better with this second portion of the bonus stack overall though. Of the 20 extra cards I used in my first post yesterday, I already had 14. Out of today's 20, only 9 were cards I already had. Plus I was able to add a couple of cards I needed towards the '90-91 and '91-92 Upper Deck sets. Any of my doubles from this post are available if you need them, as well as any of the Donruss cards.
