Mark of Stats on the Back has been sending out cards lately. I'm too dumb to figure out what I need to send him in return. So I dig up some Mets, write a note of apology for my stupidity, and mail them off. I figure, he's a teacher, he's used to lame excuses. Just think of me as one of your students. You know, the one who cowers in the back. The poor kid doesn't even know what "cowers" means, but he does it very well.

Anyway, Mark found a way to get even. Included with the cool cards that he sent was this ratty old pack of 1988 Donruss. It was being used as packing material. But it was also unopened. Sealed shut. And you know what that means, don't you? Yes, I was about to lose my 1988 Donruss virginity.

It's true:

I have never opened a pack of 1988 Donruss in my life.

Pick your mouth up off the ground. That's rude.

I was in college in 1988. It wasn't a peak collecting time. A couple of packs of Topps. That was it.

Years and years later, during my collecting hiatus, I walked into a collectibles shop. Amid the usual dustables was a box of random cards. I've mentioned this before. Most of it was '88 Donruss. Even though I wasn't collecting, I sensed an opportunity when I saw one and grabbed all the stars I could find. What the hell, they were about 5 cents apiece anyway.

So, aside from the Dodgers team set, I've seen very few common '88 Donruss cards, and have never pulled any from a pack. So, many thanks for the opportunity, Mark. Here is what I pulled:

#85 - Jim Deshaies
#577 - Tom Pagnozzi
#453 - Chris James
#329 - Dave Concepcion
#205 - John Kruk
#80 - Scott Garrelts
#572 - Darnell Coles
#448 - Rafael Ramirez
#581 - Herm Winningham
#334 - Ken Williams
#210 - Gary Pettis
#455 - Dave Meads
#84 - Greg Mathews
#576 - Steve Jeltz
#452 - Guy Hoffman

My goodness. That's a lot of commons. In fact, that was the crappiest pack I've ever opened. Why were people buying this stuff? Concepcion is the star of the pack. Easily. Don't hand me that "but, Kruk ..." line. All I see are commons.

Well, that's not entirely true. This was the star of the pack:

That was my guaranteed Stan Musial puzzle piece. That's the best puzzle piece you could get. Much better than a leg or dead space. It's practically a card in itself.

Anyway, all of this junk wax opening reminded me that I've always been stumped as to the inspiration behind the 1988 Donruss design.

It has a very '80s computer feel, but I've repressed every memory I have about computers in the 1980s (too many failing grades in programming class), so I don't remember what this is supposed to be.

Does anyone know a good name for this design? Maybe it's not even computer-inspired. But it's got to be patterned after something.

While we're at it, how about a name for this design?

Everyone loves this set. It's lost on me. But since so many people like 1987 Donruss, I'm hoping someone has a good name for it.

How about 1986 Donruss? My least favorite design of the '80s. If it's all right with everyone, I am taking Bo's suggestion and calling it the "Max Headroom" Design.

It makes me dislike 1986 Donruss less. And it certainly fits with the time period. Who didn't love Max Headroom? For 15 minutes anyway.

Also, to jump out of the junk wax era for a minute, I am going to name another lousy Donruss set.

I was inspired by the recent post at A Pack to Be Named Later. Like I said over there, Donruss has the honor of winning the prize for "Worst Positioned Logo Ever." On about 50 percent of the cards, it looks like Donruss is censoring a player's groin. I don't know why this didn't go through the head of anyone creating the set. It's just a disaster.

So, I'm calling this the "Metallic Loin Cloth" set.

If you have a better name, feel free to shout it out. But I have a hard time believing anyone will get me to change the name, because the terrible logo placement is all I can see.

Mostly, what I am looking for are names for the 1987 and 1988 Donruss sets. And if you come up with something I use, then I'll find some cards for you. Maybe I'll go down to the card shop I vowed not to go into again and grab some of the late '90s/early '00s packs they have for you. That might be fun. For 15 minutes anyway.

Oh, I almost forgot, Mark sent me some cool cards, too. Here they are:

Some 1972 Topps set needs -- one of the best sets ever. I saved the Alou card for last to let you know that he is posing on A MAJOR LEAGUE FIELD!!!! That is the Oakland A's stadium! Wow. I think they had a rabbit problem in 1971.

Mark also sent me a 1966 Bob Miller card that I forgot to scan, and this great 1959 Topps card of Fred Kipp, who pitched in 40 games in 1958, but in only 7 other games the rest of his major league career.

The Dodgers' team set for 1959 is massive, as it is for most of the teams. I'll be collecting that one a while.

Oh, and here's the back of the card:

I always feel guilty when I post cards from Mark and don't post a card back. Plus, the cartoon is fantastic and it keeps my mind off the text on the left, which refers to "the trouble-tossed Dodgers." Who won the World Series the next year, Topps? WHO? You can toss your troubles you know where.

OK, that's it. If you have design name ideas, leave them in the comments. Thank you graciously.

Stats on the Back has held a lot of various "giveaway trades" lately, where he offers up a big lot o' cards for his needs, or one card that he'll enjoy. I took advantage with his player sets and grabbed an Albert Belle lot a few weeks back, and now he was offering up vintage-y stuff, so I bit the bullet again and said I'm in.

Since I don't really collect vintage yet but like to have it, I simply asked for the oldest unclaimed card that he could send. Being an awesome guy, Mark sent much more than that, but the goodies started with that oldest card, a 1969 Topps #62 Chico Salmon:
Ooooo. This card is my first MLB card from a team that doesn't exist today (excluding the Expos since that's relatively recent). I love the big team name in the middle of the card - so simple, yet so good.

And the backs even better, for me anyways:
First of all, I LOVE expansion drafts - be they the new Cleveland Browns, the Houston Texans, the Rays and Dbacks, or whatever, I have always loved seeing who gets picked by expansion teams. Apparently Chico was one of those guys, as the Pilots picked him for their team between the end of 1968 and the making of this card. I also never realized that the Pilots only existed for one year before becoming the Brewers, so I guess there aren't many Pilots cards out there. So I feel lucky to have one!

And the base stealing cartoon is so cool, as I love cards that get into that criminal aspect of base stealing. Reminds me of a card I've posted here a few times before, my 1999 Topps Brian Hunter:
Never gets old haha.

Mark also send along some 1970 Topps, specifically #'s 243 and 417 (Yay Expos!):

And a few 1971's, #'s 274, 317, 353, and 392:
I really like the Rookie Stars card a lot. I also like that Slocum's card has his position "fixed," via pen, from infield to catcher. There's even more writing on the back:
The Taylor is a bit hard to see as I cut it off with the scanner, but it says Pitt Pirates, while Slocum says Padres. I asked Mark if he wrote on these and he said no - I was just curious because I know that some of my Panini Stickers from the late 80's/early 90's had writing on them as a kid since I was pretty young! I'm sure if my Dad had given me some of these older cards, I would've written on them too. Good thing he didn't hahaha.

Last but not least in this excellent trade package were two packs of 1988 Donruss. The things were actually sort of "Hot Packs," with some great pulls for the day, including these 5:
That's be, clockwise from top left, a Mark Grace Rated Rookie, a Wally Joyner 2nd year card (with wax pack damage haha), a Benito Santiago 2nd year card, a Dwight Evans, and a Barry Lamar Bonds 2nd year card. Pretty nice pick of guys!

Of course I was most impressed with these two cards, aka stoned/weird eyebrows Kipped and Mickey Tettleton packing the biggest wad of chew I have ever seen in my life:
Weird, huh? If you look closely, I think he's holding the can in his hands, but the logo and his hands make it hard to see.

Thanks so much for all of the great cards Mark!

I thought I would get back to blogging about the simple things: cards I like. They are generally worthless and don't really fit into my collecting goals. But I like them so they are allowed to take their place with Aaron, Pujols, Yogi, etc.

1993 Upper Deck #103 Jay BellBell is taking infield, wearing a t-shirt that reads "WE NEED ME". The "WE" must refer to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 1992 Pirates won 96 games and eventually lost to the Atlanta Braves in the postseason. Jay Bell was arguably the 3rd best position player for the Pirates that year, behind Bonds and Van Slyke. In 1993, Bell was the best position player and the Pirates finished 5th in the NL East, winning only 75 games. So while the Pirates "needed" Jay Bell, they didn't need him nearly as much as they needed BARRY BONDS!

Next up is 1970 Topps, the grey ones. Most, but not all, are commons that need a better home. I am going to attempt to give the rules of trading again. You guys follow direction worse than my 8th graders at school!!! (I have enjoyed all the cards sent to me!) My goal is to slowly make my collection smaller and better.

1. Send as many cards off my want list as you want. Check out my new All-Time team want list.
2. If you don't have any off my want lists, send ONE card. (It doesn't have to be a Met but it could be. I am always looking to upgrade cards in my various binders. Shiny, autographed, and swatched cards are always welcome. I also enjoy the random card that I may one day blog about (like the old days).) NOT ONE CARD PER CARD, but ONE CARD FOR ALL THAT YOU CLAIM.

Fill your set list needs, start a team set, Claim away! Claimed cards are in red if I have updated recently. Also check the comments.1970 Topps
2 Segui, 13, 18, 21 A's Rookies (Blue & Tenace), 31, 38, 44, 47, 49

52, 54 Torborg, 55 Odom, 57, 64 AL RBI Ldrs (Killebrew, Boog, R.Jackson), 66 AL HR Ldrs (Killebrew, Howard, R.Jackson), 67 NL ERA Ldrs (Marichal, Carlton, Gibson), 71 NL K Ldrs (Jenkins, Gibson, Singer), 72 Al K Ldrs (McDowell, Lolich, Messersmith), 72 Al K Ldrs (McDowell, Lolich, Messersmith), 73, 79, 80, 84, 87, 91, 93, 94

103, 107, 115, 126, 128 Checklist (UNmarked), 131 Dodger Rookies, 134, 135, 135, 143, 144, 147, 147

152, 158, 159, 164, 165, 169, 178, 178, 179, 184 Fosse, 185, 193

201 Al Game 3 (Boog), 202 O's Celebrate, 203, 203, 205 Campaneris, 207 Tigers Rookies, 208, 208, 219, 219, 223, 226, 227 Astros Rookies (Mayberry), 228, 232, 233, 237, 238, 241 Royals Rookies, 243, 243, 249, 249

253, 262 Padres Rookies, 267 Twins Rookies, 269, 274, 277, 281, 284, 288, 288, 292, 294, 295, 297

302, 303, 314, 316, 324, 325, 332 Wine, 334, 342 Wood, 345

353, 364, 367, 375, 378, 382, 385389, 397, 398

404, 412, 416, 417, 417, 421, 430 Messersmith, 430 Messersmith, 432 Checklist (UNmarked), 433, 434 F.Alou, 439, 442 Mauch

456 Kessinger All-Star, 483, 496, 499

515, 525, 535, 542 Checklist (marked)

583 Lanier

686 SP

Stake your claims in the comments section.
