182 Packs of Baseball – 047 – Murphy’s Law

I am looking at the card facing me inside the cellophane wrapper, and I believe we have seen this before. That means, we have at least one double that I recognize! Wahoo! Sure, I know that may not mean much to you, but I am starting to feel bad for the folks who aren't getting any doubles yet. I'm just glad there's no admission fee. Then again, we still have plenty of cards to open up and lots of the same packs in different years/brands. Today, I've grabbed a 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars pack.

Say what!? Dale Murphy! Now, that's worth sticking around. By far, one of the best pulls from the oversized card set.

Each day of the regular baseball season, I am busting open a pack of baseball cards. These are packs that I have laying around and/or that I have purchased recently on a whim. I list the cards in the pack and scan in some of them. I shoot for 9 cards, but sometimes I may scan more, other times fewer. It all depends on how things hit me in that particular pack. Oh yes, there will be duplication. I have a TON of packs from certain brands/years. I will, however, try to mix things up throughout the season.

For those keeping score, I know there are not actually 182 GAMEDAYS in the 2012 season. I am counting ALL the days between Opening Day and the last day of the regular season. Frankly, it's easier that way. Thanks for playing along.

Hey, come on over! Thanks for stopping by on this Sunday for a look at today's pack of cards. Today, we've got another pack of 1994 Fleer Ultra Series II to rifle through. I hope we find something really cool in here today. Well, I'm hoping we find something really cool in any of the packs, really. And, we have found some inserts, some interesting cards, and certainly players we know by name. I have no doubt we'll find at least one of those today. Right?

The "Phillies Finest" cards are a neat change of pace. The Turner Ward card looks like it came circa 1950-something. Weird exposure on that one. Am I the only one that thought "Pulsipher" was actually "Pillpusher?" I mean, even back then, I thought that was his name. I am one twisted dude.

Reaching in to the box of packs, I pull out a 1997 Pinnacle Hobby. No, not the "NEW" ones, the other ones they made in '97 before they decided to switch to the new design in midstream.

Wow. Fernando... I still remember when he first came to the Bigs and was touted the next best thing since Cy Young himself. Or, somthing like that. There sure a re a LOT of Reds in this pack. About a third of the cards are Reds. This one also gave us a look at some serious names in baseball at the time: Larkin, Schilling, Gonzalez, Clemens... Not a bad pack at all.

Today is May 18th! My wife and I got married Twenty-One years ago today! Wahoo!!

In honor of that day, I bought a handful (literally - there are five) of packs from 1991 Topps! If you've seen "My Card" over there on the right of the blog, you may recognize the layout as being the 1991 Topps design. Yes, it is specifically the 1991 Topps because of our anniversary.

Are the post titles getting monotonous? Certainly, they lack creativity. Alas, I am going for consistency and place-keeping, so I don't imagine the titles changing any time soon. I appreciate you coming along for the ride despite my logical approach to these breaks. Er, well, the titles anyway. I'm not sure how "logical" the break themselves are. If they were, I'd either set up a pattern or opene all of one type until they ran out or something. Instead, I am going for the randomness.

Well, either way, nice to see him in the mix along with Smoltzie. I think it's a little weird that they made a title card to go along with the set.

Today marks the 42nd day of pack opening. As we all know, the number "42" represents a special place in America's Pasttime. So, today, I am going to bust open 42 packs of cards! No, just kidding. You think I'm nuts!? Well, even so, I'm not opening 42 packs in one shot. As fun as that would be, it would mostly serve to deplete my box o' packs.

I will, however, crack open a pack of 1994 Fleer Ultra Series II. That's close, right?

Hey everyone! Thanks for tagging along on our journey to open at least one pack for every day of the 2012 regular baseball season. I haven't gone back to look at the singles/doubles comparison, so I don't know where we sit as far as handing out cards to everyone. I'm sure that by the end of the season, we'll have plenty of doubles to go around. I realized today that I have a lot of single packs, which means no chance of doubles from those particular ones. I'll see if I can pick up some more of the packs that fit that category and try to force some doubles.

In the meantime, here's a pack I know I've got a lot of: 1996 Leaf Hobby. We've seen 'em before and we will definitely see them throughout the break.

The first pack is a 1991 Studio featuring Rod Carew puzzle pieces. How many of us sat at the table as kids and put puzzles together with our mothers? I did. Though, what I mostly remember is her teaching me Canasta. I have since long forgotten how to play that game.

Pausing for Cards from Night Owl

I received a surprise in the mail. I had a bubbleope from Night Owl! That can only mean some good Triber cardness.

First up, we've got 2012 Topps Opening Day Grady Sizemore. I don't know if you can tell, but he appears to be look up at a ball he just hit. His facial expression suggests a long fly out. The next card is also a 2012 Topps Opening Day. Jason "Hitnis" is shown turning a double play. The guy on the ground is a Rangers player. Next, we have a 1990 Score Young Superstar Felix Fermin. He is catching some serious ball-tossing air here!

Mark Lewis starts off the next few cards. This is probably the pose that most sticks out in my mind when I think of Lewis. He is poised on a 1994 Upper Deck. The next card is UBER-SWEET! Greg sent a mini-1975 Topps featuring John Denny, Rawly Eastwick, Jim Kern, and Juan Veintidos. That is probably the only picture of Kern where his hair is not wild and crazy, sticking out all over the place. He also looks way more serious in this photo than I think he looks on any other card I can think of. Rounding out this trio, Omar Vizquel on a 1999 Topps Hands of Gold. Oh, ladies and gentlemen, this card is a thing of beauty. I am a sucker for the die cuts. Where is Pacific when you need them?

Finishing out the bubbleope, Justin Masterson is hurling ball on a 2012 Topps Opening Day. Frank Herrmann just finished hurling. That is one mean leg-kick there, buddy. Stay out of the way of that one! He comes to us on a 2009 Topps Black Parallel. Nice!
