Topps Now World Baseball Classic Cards

For the third straight tournament Topps has the license to produce baseball cards for the World Baseball Classic.  I don’t know what plans they have for sets later this year (or if they have plans for sets later this year) but I was tipped off by …

2016 Epoch JWBL Set

I don’t know a whole lot about the Japan Women’s Baseball League (JWBL).  The league was founded in 2009 as the Girls Professional Baseball League (GPBL) and was renamed in 2013.  There have apparently always been four teams in the league alt…

2017 BBM Farewell set

BBM’s 7th annual set for retiring players came out back in January.  As usual I don’t exactly know what to call this set – the translation of the title is something like “Regret at Parting Baseball Players” but I always refer to it as the “Farewel…

Early Spring Releases

Something a little odd has been going on lately and I think I like it.  In the past, BBM’s website has typically been much later in announcing new sets than the card shop sites like Discount Niki and Hot Box.  But in the last week or so, new …

New Releases For The New Year

There was a couple weeks where I was starting to wonder what was going on – there didn’t seem to have been any announcements being made about any 2017 releases.  Then about a week or so, BBM made an announcement about their annual Retirement set a…

2017 BBM Time Travel 1975

BBM didn’t do a “Historic Collection” set this year, replacing it with the Fusion set.  For those looking for their OB player fix (beyond the 55 OB players in the Fusion set that is) BBM issued a set in late December called “Time Travel 1975”. &nb…

BBM’s Back In The Ultra High End Set Business

BBM issued the first Japanese ultra high-end set almost two years ago with a set called “Master Of Insert”.  This set was issued in packs of six cards (well, five cards plus a checklist card) for 15,000 yen.  It apparently was quite popular b…

2016 BBM Fusion

Last month BBM released a new set called Fusion.  This set apparently is taking the place of the annual “Historic Collection” sets that BBM has done since 2001.  Like the “Historic Collection” sets, the set has 144 cards but there aren’t many…

2016 Calbee Samurai Japan Set

Last month Calbee issued a set for the Samurai Japan, the Japan National Baseball team.  I suppose to be completely accurate I should point out that this set is for the professional version of the team – there’s several different amateur versions …

More New Stuff

A couple other upcoming releases of note:- BBM is not doing their traditional “Historic Collection” set this year but they are still going to do an OB set.  It’s called “Time Travel 1975” and as the name suggests, it’s a set dedicated to 1975. &nb…

Late New Stuff

2016 Calbee Series Three

Going to start getting caught up on posts I wanted to to while in testing hell but seeing as I’ll be on the road next week, I don’t think I’m going to get very far…Calbee Series Three was released about a month ago.  At 88 cards, it’s the same s…

Quick Post On New Stuff

I apologize for the lack of posts in the last week or so – I’ve been buried under testing at work lately and it’s not going to get any better in the immediate future.  I’m going to take this opportunity to try to catch up on a couple new releases …

The Future Will Be In Stock

Once again I have gotten far enough behind in the new set posts that one of the sets has been released.  So let’s get caught up…

– Hitting the stores today is the latest of BBM’s Authentic Edition team box sets.  This one is called “CLIMAX” and features the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.  Each box contains 31 cards – the 30 card base set plus one “special” card which may be an autograph or memorabilia card – including jersey and patch cards.  There are multi-player jersey cards available.  You can check out the base set at Jambalaya – the Shohei Ohtani card has him both batting and pitching.

– BBM’s putting out another team box set on September 15 – this is the latest Autograph Edition set and it’s for the Carp.  The set is entitled “Katsukoi“.  Each box contains 28 cards – a 27 card base set plus one autographed card.  Multi-player autograph cards are possibilities.

– For the third year in a row BBM is releasing a box set dedicated to a team’s cheerleader/dance squad.  This year it’s for Giants Venus, Yomiuri’s cheerleaders and is called “Original Smile“.  The box contains 44 cards – 42 cards from the base set plus two “special” cards which could be autograph cards (including multi-person autograph cards), facsimile autograph cards and memorabilia cards.  The base has 19 cards of the team members in their costumes, 19 cards of the team members wearing yukata and four cards that are group photos.  The box also contains a “raw photo” that I think is essentially a parallel of one of the 38 cards that show a single team member.  The set will be released on September 15.

– Epoch has three high end team sets coming out in the next month or so.  The Swallows “Shadow Box Edition” will be out on September 24.  It looks like one box (at 11,200 yen) only has five cards in it but it’s not clear to me what the breakdown of those five cards is.  I think there’s three base cards and two “special” cards but I’m not sure.  There are 27 possible cards in the base set and a bewildering variety of autograph and memorabilia cards available.    The Carp “Stars & Rookies” set will be released on October 8.  One box of this (MSRP of 11,200 yen) contains one 12 card pack containing 10 base set cards (of a possible 42) and either a parallel card and a “special” card or two “special” cards.  The “special” cards could be autograph or jersey cards.  The Fighters “Season Achievement” set will be out on October 22.  Each box (MSRP of 11,700 yen) contains one 10 card pack – five base set cards (of a possible 36), one regular parallel card, one holo “Spectra” card, one “Crystal” die cut cards and two “special” cards – possibly autograph or jersey.

– On the more affordable end of the spectrum, Epoch is also releasing a set for the Japan Woman’s Baseball League (JWBL) on October 10th.  This is a more traditional pack based set (each box contains 20 packs of five cards each).  There are 78 cards in the base set and possible autograph and “cheki” cards (not quite sure what those are).  This will be the first major card set for the JWBL since BBM did some sets in conjunction with the GPBL (as the JWBL was known then) back in 2010-11.

(And in case you’re wondering about the title of the post, it’s how Google translated the title of the “upcoming sets” section on Jambalaya’s web page – 今後の入荷予定)

More New Stuff

Several new sets have been announced recently:- The last time I did a “new cards post” I mentioned that Sports Graphic Number was releasing a set in September featuring Hiroki Kuroda and Takahiro Arai of the Carp to celebrate the two of them reaching t…

2016 Calbee Series Two

The latest Calbee release (and the second Series for the season) was released a couple weeks ago and I got my copy in the mail the other day.  I’d mentioned in my write-up for Series One that it was the smallest Calbee Series set in recent memory …

Pro Yakyuu AI Fighters

I made a trade with Dani recently and picked up a couple cards from the “Pro Yakyuu AI Fighters” set that came out in late April.  This set is a little unusual in that all the cards in the set feature photos of the players in street clothes. &nbsp…

Recently Announced New Stuff

Chips And Cheerleaders

A couple newly announced sets to talk about:- The checklist for this seasons’s Series Two from Calbee went up on their website in the last week or so.  Like Series One, the new set has 72 player cards (six per team) and a 12 card subset featu…

BBM’s Website Is Back!

After being down for the better part of a month, BBM’s website is back on line.  They’ve moved their list of new sets to a new page.  They’ve added info for a couple of the sets I mentioned last monththe Tatsunari Hara box set and the Carp and Baystars team sets – but not for the Lions team set and the Ohtani/Fujinami box set.  The Lions set is scheduled to be released this coming Friday so BBM better get moving.

BBM did add information for two more of the team sets – the Buffaloes and the Fighters.  Both sets have base sets of 81 cards featuring around 70 cards for the players and manager and several subsets.  Both sets have four insert sets – the Fighters have 27 cards over the four sets while the Buffaloes have 18.  Both sets have the usual collection of autograph cards available.  I’m amused that the Fighters set has an 11 card subset featuring the players in street clothes – I guess BBM felt threatened by the AI set that came out recently.  Both sets will be out in mid-June.

Epoch has also recently announced a couple new products.  The latest of the team based “Stars & Rookies” sets is for the Buffaloes and will be released on June 25.  It’s pretty much the same idea as the Lions and Baystars sets Epoch has released earlier this season – each box (that retails for 12,960 yen or roughly $118) contains two mini-boxes containing 6 cards each – one or two will be autographed cards and the others will all be base set cards.  I think it breaks down to 9 base set cards and three autograph cards per box.  There are apparently some “hot boxes” that will contain four autograph cards.  There are 27 cards in the base set and a boatload of possible autograph cards.

The other Epoch set is their latest ultra high end set done in conjunction with the OB Club (aka the Japan Baseball Promotion Association).  The theme of this one appears to be “League Leaders”.  Once again, it’s a very expensive box (16,200 yen or around $147) for a one pack box containing two base set cards, one insert/parallel card and two autograph cards.  There are 27 players featured in the set – each player has a base set card, two different insert/parallel cards, two different autograph cards and a autographed booklet card available.  The set will be out on July 9.

There’s something on Jambalaya’s upcoming release schedule that is intriguingly called “Kabaya Central League Baseball gum”.  I finally did some Googling of the Hiragana text for it (カバヤ セントラルリーグベースボールガム) and discovered that this is a Epoch set being packaged with banana flavored gum from Kabaya.  There’s 36 cards in the set (six for each of the six Central League teams).  The set is being sold in boxes of 20 1 card packs.  The boxes have an MSRP of 2160 yen (about $19.60).  I’m including this link to Amazon Japan’s listing of the set so that you can see all the cards – the boxes are not eligible to be shipped outside of Japan though.

2016 KBO "Baseball’s Best Players" Set

As I mentioned the other day, I picked up a box of one of the latest Korean baseball card sets recently.  This is the second of the “Baseball’s Best Players” sets and it’s very similar to the previous one. Each box contains 20 eight card packs. &nb…

2016 Calbee Series One

The first “flagship” set of the year was released by Calbee a few weeks back and my copy of the set arrived today in the mail courtesy of Yahoo! Japan Auctions by way of JAUCE.  At 94 cards in the base set, this year’s Series One is the smallest C…

New Upcoming Non-BBM Sets
